Rearview Camera May Fail

Failure of the rearview camera image to display can reduce the driver’s rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

General MotorseBay logo, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2019-2020 CadillaceBay logo XT4 vehicles equipped with the optional Surround Vision feature. The video processing module (VPM) may lose communication with the rearview camera, causing a loss of the rearview camera image.

 

Remedy

Dealers will update the VPM software or replace the VPM, as necessary, free of charge. An interim owner notification letter informing owners of the safety defect was mailed January 17, 2023. Owner notification letters were mailed February 3, 2023. Owners may contact CadillaceBay logo customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM’s number for this recall is N222373320.

The rear-view camera (RVC) in these vehicles may fail or function intermittently. If the rear-view camera is not functioning properly, rear visibility is reduced, increasing the risk of a crash during a backing event.

 

Correction

Dealers will reprogram the Video Processing Module (VPM).

Dealers will update video processing module (VPM) software. For 2019 model year vehicles, this will also require replacement of the VPM.

If the rear-view camera is not functioning properly, rear visibility is reduced, increasing the risk of a crash during a backing event.

Customers who own a vehicle involved in the field action will be notified by mail by General MotorseBay logo, but they may also check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for field actions at the GM Recall Centre gmrecallcentre.ca.

 

Q10) If customers are concerned, can they get a rental car or courtesy transportation?

Courtesy transportation is available for customers whose vehicles are involved in this recall and are within the warranty coverage period for the warranty which is associated with this recall.  Please refer to Warranty Administration Bulletin #17-NA-073:  Field Action Courtesy Transportation Policy for further information.

 


Chronology :

GM opened an investigation into the subject condition on August 2, 2022, after a preliminary review identified field reports of 2020 model-year CadillaceBay logo XT4 vehicles experiencing malfunctioning rear-view cameras (RVCs).

GMโ€™s investigation analyzed relevant field data relating to RVC performance for 2019 through 2022 model year XT4 vehicles. GMโ€™s field-data analysis identified a significantly higher claim rate associated with the 2019 and 2020 model year vehicles, which were manufactured before certain improvements were made to the vehiclesโ€™ VPM software. GM identified 847 potentially relevant field reports relating to this vehicle population, which GM received from December 28, 2018, to September 19, 2022.

Based on this analysis, GMโ€™s Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) decided to conduct a safety recall on the 2019 and 2020 model year XT4 vehicles on November 17, 2022.

Reprogramming

GM Diagnostic/Programming (TIS2Web)

 

Approved J2534 Device with TIS2WEB can reprogram 1996 and later All GM Modules.

To obtain the latest electronic controller calibration information for your vehicle, go to https://tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web and enter the vehicle's 17 character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and select 'Get CAL IDโ€™.

You can then compare the latest part number with the actual number installed on the vehicle to determine if a reprogram is needed.

The Service Programming System (SPS) application is part of the TIS2Web system. To program an ECU, the SPS application must communicate with the vehicle control modules using the proper J2534 programming interface tool.

The Tech 2 supports model years 1996 and beyond. With the addition of the CAN Diagnostic Interface (CANdi) module, Tech 2 is fully backward compatible with current Tech 2 functionality and operates transparently when diagnosing non-CAN-equipped vehicles.

Servicing the next generation Global A vehicles will require the diagnostic software, GDS2, Global Diagnostic System 2 running on a local PC device while the MDI is connected to the vehicle. The GM MDI is the Global Diagnostic tool for future vehicles starting with Global A vehicles.

The GM MDI was introduced in the fall of 2007 for Pass-Thru programming and offers faster programming speed. It can be used to perform Pass-Thru programming on all vehicles built since 1996 and into the future. Click here to view a list of GDS supported vehicles.
