Production Dates : JUL 29, 2022 – AUG 02, 2022 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Noncompliance : Description of the Noncompliance : General Motors has decided that certain 2022 model year Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208, “Occupant Crash Protection.” In these vehicles, the sensing diagnostic module (SDM) was left in “manufacturing mode” and not activated at the assembly plant prior to shipment. FMVSS 1 : 208 – Occupant crash protection FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If the SDM is in manufacturing mode, the vehicle’s airbags will not deploy in a crash, increasing the risk of occupant injury. Description of the Cause : Due to temporary production process changes, these vehicles did not undergo a manufacturing verification test step that activates the vehicle’s SDM. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : This condition can be identified by the airbag/supplemental inflatable restraint malfunction indicator lamp on the instrument panel, which will illuminate and remain illuminated (solid or flashing) after the vehicle is turned on. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-873 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Involved Components : Component Name 1 : MODULE ASM-AIRBAG SEN & DIAGN Component Description : Sensing Diagnostic Module (SDM) Component Part Number : 13552065 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : NR Address : NR NR Country : NR Chronology : On October 13, 2022, a GM internal audit determined that several 2022 model year Chevrolet Silverado vehicles may have been shipped from the plant before completing post-manufacturing dynamic validation testing (DVT). The issue was submitted to GM’s Speak Up For Safety Program on October 19, 2022 and GM opened a formal investigation on October 21, 2022. GM’s investigator determined that five vehicles in this condition were delivered to dealers. No vehicles were sold to customers in this condition. By November 6, 2022, all affected vehicles had been returned to GM’s assembly plant to activate their SDMs. On November 17, 2022, GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) decided to conduct a noncompliance recall. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : All five vehicles were held at GM dealerships and remained in a status that did not allow them to be invoiced and sold. They were returned to the assembly plant to complete the missed verification test step during which the sensing diagnostic module (SDM) was set to the correct mode so that airbags and other SDM functions will perform as designed. Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 573.13(d)(1), all covered vehicles are under warranty, so reimbursement is not offered. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : When vehicles complete DVT testing, the SDM is set to the correct mode.
