Chronology :
A GM quality engineer submitted this issue to GM’s Speak Up For Safety (SUFS) program on April 11, 2024, after GM’s supplier of drive unit stator assemblies discovered that a line operator failed to apply an insulating “varnish” to some of the assemblies. These suspect assemblies may have been built into ten vehicles which were sold in the US.
GM opened a product investigation on April 16, 2024. GM’s investigation determined that the lack of varnish could eventually lead to wire-to-wire contact within the drive unit stator, resulting in propulsion shutdown without warning.
On May 2, 2024, GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) decided to conduct a safety recall. GM is not aware of any field incidents associated with this defect.
