Chronology :

On November 17, 2023, an engineer at GM’s assembly plant submitted this issue to GM’s Speak Up For Safety (SUFS) program after discovery of four front wheel hub bolts with signs of deformation on ChevroleteBay logo Colorado and GMC Canyon vehicles. The discovery was made shortly after the November 9, 2023, implementation of a torque strategy change for installation of the bolts, which the plant rescinded as a precaution on November 16, 2023. GM opened a product investigation on January 5, 2024.

GM’s investigation found that the torque strategy change did not include fail-safe measures to prevent the in-plant assembly contractor from initiating multiple tightening attempts on the same bolt, leading to potential over-torquing during installation. On March 21, 2024, GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) decided to conduct a safety recall. GM is not aware of any field incidents or complaints associated with this defect.
