SUBJECT: Special Coverage Adjustment – Excessive Engine Oil Consumption

Equipped with 2.4L Engine (LAF)
The Piston and Ring Replacement section has been revised, prior to step 1, to emphasize the PCV
orifice procedure in the referenced Technical Service Bulletin. Please discard all copies of bulletin
15285C.
CONDITION
Some 2011 model year Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles, equipped with a 2.4L engine,
may exhibit excessive engine oil consumption (less than 2,000 miles per quart of engine oil), due
to piston ring wear. If this condition is present, the oil can light may illuminate on the instrument
panel or the following message may appear in the Driver Information Center: “Oil Pressure Low –
Stop Engine”.
SPECIAL COVERAGE ADJUSTMENT
This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 7 years and 6 months
or 120,000 miles (193,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally
placed in service, regardless of ownership.
Dealers are to replace the 4 piston assemblies. The repairs will be made at no charge to the
customer.
For vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after
July 21, 2015, are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labor operation
codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to July 21, 2015, must be submitted
to the Service Contract provider.
VEHICLES INVOLVED
All involved vehicles are identified by Vehicle Identification Number on the Applicable Warranties
section in GM Global Warranty Management system. Dealership service personnel should always
check this site to confirm vehicle involvement prior to beginning any required inspections and/or
repairs. It is important to routinely use this tool to verify eligibility because not all similar vehicles
may be involved regardless of description or option content.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
Note: This special policy covers repairs after the original powertrain warranty has expired. For
vehicles still covered under the original powertrain warranty, the labor code operations should be
used from bulletin 13-06-01-003.
Note: Technicians should perform an oil consumption test to determine if the pistons and rings
must be replaced. Follow the latest version of Corporate Bulletin Number 01-06-01-011 to perform
an oil consumption test. Before starting the oil consumption test, verify the ECM has latest
TIS2web calibrations to adjust the engine oil life monitor to a maximum of 7,500 miles (12,070 km)
— Refer to the latest version of Customer Satisfaction Bulletin number 12312.

1. Determine the rate of oil consumption.
If the oil consumption test indicates that the rate of consumption is less than 1 quart (0.946L)
of oil every 2,000 miles (3,200 km), note the oil consumption rate and the date that the ECM
was reprogrammed. No further action is required.
If the oil consumption test indicates that the rate of consumption is greater than 1 quart
(0.946 L) of oil every 2,000 miles (3,200 km), note the oil consumption rate, the date that the
ECM was reprogrammed and replace the pistons and rings.
Note: The repair is to replace the pistons and rings. In some cases the bore surface may not have
a uniform look to the finish (zebra stripes) as shown in Technical Service Bulletin 13-06-01-003F.
As a result, some technicians may question whether the engine should be repaired or replaced.
After careful evaluation, GM Powertrain has determined that the new pistons and rings will
perform correctly in bores that have this appearance so engine replacement should not be
necessary. The cylinder bores do not need any machine or honing work performed on them. Refer
to Technical Service Bulletin 13-06-01-003F for more information.

1. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
2. Remove the pistons from the engine.
3. Remove the pistons from the connecting rods.
4. Discard the pistons and piston rings.

5. Install the new piston rings onto the new pistons.
6. Install the new pistons onto the connecting rods.
7. Assemble the engine.
8. Install the engine into the vehicle.
CUSTOMER REIMBURSEMENT – For US
Customer requests for reimbursement of previously paid repairs to correct the condition described
in this bulletin are to be submitted to the dealer by August 31, 2016, unless otherwise specified by
state law. If this is not convenient for the customer, they may mail the completed Customer
Reimbursement Request Form and all required documents to the GM Customer Assistance Center.
Repairs must have occurred within the 7 years and 6 months of the date the vehicle was originally
placed in service, or 120,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
All reasonable and customary costs to correct the condition described in this bulletin should
be considered for reimbursement. Any questions or concerns should be reviewed with your
GM representative prior to processing the request.
When a customer requests reimbursement, they must provide the following:
A completed Customer Reimbursement Request Form. This form is mailed to the customer
or can be obtained through GM GlobalConnect.
The name and address of the person who paid for the repair.
Paid receipt confirming the amount of the repair expense, a description of the repair, and
the person or entity performing the repair.
IMPORTANT: GM requires dealers to approve or deny a reimbursement request within 30 days of
receipt. If a reimbursement request is approved, the dealer should immediately issue a check to
the customer and submit an appropriate warranty transaction for the incurred expense. If a
reimbursement request is denied, the dealer MUST provide the customer with a clear and concise
explanation, in writing, as to why the request was denied. The bottom portion of the Customer
Reimbursement Request Form may be used for this purpose. If the denial was due to missing
documents, the customer can resubmit the request when the missing documents are obtained, as
long as it is still within the allowed reimbursement period.
Warranty transactions for customer reimbursement of previously paid repairs are to be submitted
as required by GM Global Warranty Management. Additional information can also be found in
Warranty Administration Bulletin 11-00-89-004.

CUSTOMER REIMBURSEMENT – For Canada and Export

COURTESY TRANSPORTATION – For US and Canada
The General Motors Courtesy Transportation program is intended to minimize customer
inconvenience when a vehicle requires a repair that is covered by the New Vehicle Limited
Warranties. The availability of courtesy transportation to customers whose vehicles are within the
warranty coverage period and involved in a product program is very important in maintaining
customer satisfaction. Dealers are to ensure that these customers understand that shuttle service
or some other form of courtesy transportation is available and will be provided at no charge. Dealers
should refer to the General Motors Service Policies and Procedures Manual for Courtesy
Transportation guidelines.

As the owner of a 2011 model year Chevrolet Equinox or GMC Terrain, your satisfaction with our
product is very important to us.
This letter is intended to make you aware that some 2011 model year Chevrolet Equinox and
GMC Terrain vehicles, equipped with a 2.4L engine, may exhibit excessive engine oil
consumption (less than 2,000 miles per quart of engine oil), due to piston ring wear. Check your
oil level periodically. Also, if this condition is present, the oil can light may illuminate on your
instrument panel or you may have the following message in the Driver Information Center: “Oil
Pressure Low – Stop Engine”. See your owner manual for additional information on what to do if
the vehicle displays this message.
Do not take your vehicle to your GM dealer as a result of this letter unless you believe that
your vehicle has the condition as described above.
What We Have Done: General Motors is providing owners with additional protection for the
condition described above. If this condition occurs on your 2011 model year Chevrolet Equinox or
GMC Terrain within 7 years and 6 months of the date your vehicle was originally placed in service
or 120,000 miles (193,000 km), whichever occurs first, the condition will be repaired for you at no
charge. Diagnosis or repair for conditions other than the condition described above is not
covered under this special coverage program.
What You Should Do: Be sure to maintain proper engine oil level at all times and have the oil
changed when the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message appears on the Driver Information
Center. If you believe that your vehicle has the condition described above, repairs and
adjustments qualifying under this special coverage must be performed by a General Motors
dealer. You may want to contact your GM dealer to find out how long they will need to have your
vehicle so that you may schedule the appointment at a time that is convenient for you. This will
also allow your dealer to order parts if they are not already in stock. Keep this letter with your
other important glove box literature for future reference.
Reimbursement: If you have paid for repairs for the condition described in this letter, please
complete the enclosed reimbursement form and present it to your dealer with all required
documents. Working with your dealer will expedite your request, however, if this is not
convenient, you may mail the completed reimbursement form and all required documents to
Reimbursement Department, PO Box 33170, Detroit, MI 48232-5170. The completed form and
required documents must be presented to your dealer or received by the Reimbursement

Bought our 2011 Chevy Equinox last May from a dealership. I was never informed of the bulletin not verbally nor did we get a letter. Now I wss told to do an oil consu test and they would try to work with me. No such luck . I don’t know why they told me to do the test. I knew it was using too much oil. Dealer wants $3800 for the repair. What can I say. So disappointed in GM !
I’m confused, I have the 2011 Terrain, 89k miles. Its almost August 2018, will my vehicle be covered? What do they mean by “7 years, 6 months from when the car was first put in service”? Going to the dealer tomorrow.

I have been telling gm about the oil consumption since 2011 and said it was normal. Now i have 196000 km on my terrain and was never notified that there was a problem and now they have TSB 15285C out now i have to see if they will cover my suv
I just had the oil consumption test and was approved my car was fixed per the recall procedures and within an hour of me leaving the check engine light is back on. I went starlight back and they said it’s the camshaft and the reCall doesn’t cover that? How is it now a new problem right after being fixed? If the oil consumption caused damage to the can shaft shouldn’t that be covered?
Should I get rid of my 2011 GMC Terrain? Is it going to be one thing after Another now
I purchased a 2011 Equinox back in March 2016. Since then, I’ve completed oil consumption test at least 2 times and the dealer reports there is nothing wrong, however, I must change the oil or the car shakes, rattles and knocks. I’ve had the catalytic converter fixed within the first six months. I’ve had a gas smell in my car and recently because I’ve exceeded 120, 000 miles they said I don’t have a warranty and had to pay out of pocket. Now the car alarm goes off in the middle of the night for no reason. This car is costly and as a single mother, I’m not financially equipped to put all this money into a car every other month. Now there is a recall that I was unaware of on the electrical system and was not notified at all. A lot of your responses say refer to the dealer but they are not holding up to there end of the bargain refusing service or indicating that there is no problem. I need answers now!!!!

I own a 2011 Equinox and it is doing the same problem with oil consumption. It is now making a loud rattle noise. It has 137,000 miles on it. Will the dealership fix the piston rings and do an oil consumption test or will have to pay for the repairs myself and probably be out a couple grand.
Does a special coverage adjustment require you to show proof of routine maintenance on the vehicle, similar to what you would have to do under your normal powertrain warranty?
I don’t think so, but I would ask your local dealer to be sure.
So I have a 2011 equinox 2.4 that went through the consumption test and had the “ring job.” Unfortunately it developed oil leak around edge of oil pan (doing a number on my garage floor). I brought it back, they “fixed it” and now 6 months later it is leaking again. Will bring it back, but is this a common issue with this repair?
My 2011 equinox has 85000 miles and has always burned excessive oil, now it’s leaking oil and I was told it’s the front crankshaft seal. Would this issue cause the seal to break? Will chevy cover the repair?

My 2011 Equinox is apparently not one of the ones in the special coverage adjustment. I have been concerned for the past 6-8 months about oil consumption but have no obvious leak or warning light. Am I able to have my vehicle tested even though I’m not supposedly included?
You can always keep an eye on the oil level.

I would talk to general manager. If your vehicle still has warranty, they should give you a rental.
What if I have a 2012 Equinox with 65k miles and it was manufactured 8/11? Oil consumption is around a quart every 1000 miles. No low oil light or message but check engine light comes on. Warranty or not?
Yes you should still be covered, you are with in 7 years.
I have a 2011 Equinox which I purchased from my late mother’s estate in 2016. Recently, my engine blew, and I was told that it was low on oil. I put many miles on my car and am good about changing oil. The engine light recently came on and the day the engine blew I had an appointment to have the oil changed. I never received a recall, nor did my mother in my recollection. Am I out of luck (and several $k)?
I have a 2011 Chevy Equinox with this issue. I bought it used with 80,000 miles on it. Brought it back to the dealership 3 different times (under warranty) due to the oil consumption. They blamed it on an oil leak each time. It started small and now uses 1qt every 500 miles. Unfortunately, by the time that they finally diagnosed it with this issue it was over the 120,000 mile mark and basically told me too bad. Being a single mother of 2 and this being my only mode of transportation I am beyond frustrated with GM. Will NOT make this mistake again. Even the service writer at the dealership told me it wasn’t worth the money to repair it out of pocket.
I now have a major engine problem due to this issue. Will the dealer fix it?

I received this recall and have been taking my 2011 GMC Terrain to the local GMC dealership for the last 2 months about 6000 miles and have my oil changed twice as they make me bring it in every 1000 miles to check for oil consumption and it’s always between 1/2 quart to 3 quarts low and they keep telling me there is nothing wrong and it’s not using enough oil to qualify however I should keep bringing it in. Is there anything else I can do?

I took my 2011 GMC Terrain to an auto shop as the check engine light was on. I was told the issue is due to my timing chains failing because my oil consumption is higher than normal. I informed them I regularly change my oil but they said it was typical for these models to have this issue and quoted me a ridiculous price but then I learned about this special coverage. Would my issue be covered under this special coverage even though the oil lamp light is not on?
Yes, it should be covered, the dealer most likely will do an oil consumption test, just to confirm…
My Equinox is having this same oil consumption issue. GM said they are not fixing because the owner before me had it fixed and now they don’t believe they should do again.

Hello: My 2011 Chevrolet Equinox LTZ had the above issue, was repaired using the procedure above, and still continues to use excessive amounts of oil in between oil changes (about 1.5-2 qts per 3000 miles extra). In addition, I am continually smelling burning oil, so there is an oil leak somewhere. What does GM recommend is my next course of action? Please advise immediately as this is my only means of transportation.
If you can smell oil, you most likely have an oil leak.
