#12213A: Product Safety – Brake Vacuum Micro Switch – (Jun 17, 2015)
| Subject: | Brake Vacuum Micro Switch |
| Models: | 2011-2012 Chevrolet |
| Equipped with 1.4L DOHC Turbo Engine (LUJ) and 6T40 FWD Automatic Transmission (MH8) |
The parts information, service procedure and warranty transaction Information sections have been revised. The repair has been revised to replace the power brake booster vacuum pipe, which includes the vacuum micro switch. Vehicles previously repaired under this recall do not need any additional repairs. Please discard all copies of bulletin 12213.
Condition
General Motors
has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2011–2012 model year Chevrolet
Cruze vehicles equipped with a 1.4L DOHC gasoline turbo engine (LUJ) and a 6T40 FWD automatic transmission (MH8). This engine-transmission combination requires supplemental vacuum under certain operating conditions.
An electric vacuum pump provides the supplemental vacuum, and if this is not available due to silicon on the brake vacuum micro switch, brake assist may be intermittently reduced or lost.
Reduction or loss of brake assist will require extra pedal force and/or longer distance to bring the vehicle to a stop, increasing the risk of a crash.
Correction
Dealers are to replace the power brake booster vacuum pipe.
Vehicles Involved
All involved vehicles are identified by Vehicle Identification Number on the Investigate Vehicle History screen in GM Global Warranty Management system.
Dealership service personnel should always check this site to confirm vehicle involvement prior to beginning any required inspections and/or repairs.
It is important to routinely use this tool to verify eligibility because not all similar vehicles may be involved regardless of description or option content.
For dealers with involved vehicles, a listing with involved vehicles containing the complete vehicle identification number, customer name, and address information has been prepared and will be provided to US and Canadian dealers through the GM GlobalConnect Recall Reports, or sent directly to export dealers.
Dealers will not have a report available if they have no involved vehicles currently assigned.
The listing may contain customer names and addresses obtained from Motor Vehicle Registration Records.
The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any purpose other than follow-up necessary to complete this recall is a violation of law in several states/provinces/countries.
Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this report to the follow-up necessary to complete this recall.
Parts Information
Parts required to complete this recall are to be obtained from General Motors
Customer Care and Aftersales (GMCC&A).
Please refer to your “involved vehicles listing” before ordering parts. Normal orders should be placed on a DRO = Daily Replenishment Order.
In an emergency situation, parts should be ordered on a CSO = Customer Special Order.

Customer Notification – For Export
Letters will be sent to known owners of record located within areas covered by the US National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
For owners outside these areas, dealers should notify customers using the attached sample letter.
Dealer Recall Responsibility – For US and Export (US States, Territories, and Possessions)
It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by this notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied.
The US National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act provides that each vehicle that is subject to a recall of this type must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the customer has tendered it for repair.
A failure to repair within sixty days after tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time.
If the condition is not adequately repaired within a reasonable time, the customer may be entitled to an identical or reasonably equivalent vehicle at no charge or to a refund of the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation.
To avoid having to provide these burdensome remedies, every effort must be made to promptly schedule an appointment with each customer and to repair their vehicle as soon as possible.
In the recall notification letters, customers are told how to contact the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration if the recall is not completed within a reasonable time.
Dealer Recall Responsibility – All
All unsold new vehicles in dealers’ possession and subject to this recall must be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this recall bulletin beforecustomers take possession of these vehicles.
Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this recall at no charge to customers, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.
Customers who have recently purchased vehicles sold from your vehicle inventory, and for which there is no customer information indicated on the dealer listing, are to be contacted by the dealer.
Arrangements are to be made to make the required correction according to the instructions contained in this bulletin.
A copy of the customer letter is provided in this bulletin for your use in contacting customers.
Recall follow-up cards should not be used for this purpose, since the customer may not as yet have received the notification letter.
October 2013
Dear General Motors
Customer:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
General Motors
has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2011–2012 model year Chevrolet
Cruze vehicles equipped with a 1.4L turbo engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission. As a result, GM is conducting a safety recall. We apologize for this inconvenience. However, we are concerned about your safety and continued satisfaction with our products.
Important:
IMPORTANT |
| Why is your vehicle being recalled? | This engine-transmission combination requires supplemental vacuum under certain operating conditions. An electric vacuum pump provides the supplemental vacuum, and if this is not available due to silicon on the brake vacuum micro switch, brake assist may be intermittently reduced or lost. Reduction or loss of brake assist will require extra pedal force and/or longer distance to bring the vehicle to a stop, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| What will we do? | Your GM dealer will replace the brake vacuum micro switch. This service will be performed for you at no charge . Because of service scheduling requirements, it is likely that your dealer will need your vehicle longer than the actual service correction time of approximately 25 to 45 minutes.
If your vehicle is within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, your dealer may provide you with shuttle service or some other form of courtesy transportation while your vehicle is at the dealership for this repair. Please refer to your Owner Manual and your dealer for details on courtesy transportation. |
| What should you do? | You should contact your GM dealer to arrange a service appointment as soon as possible. |
| Did you already pay for this repair? | If you have paid for repairs for the recall condition, please complete the enclosed form and present it to your dealer with all required documents. Working with your dealer will expedite your request, however, if this is not convenient, you may mail the completed form and all required documents to Reimbursement Department, PO Box 33170, Detroit, MI 48232-5170. The completed form and required documents must be presented to your dealer or received by the Reimbursement Department by December 31, 2015, unless state law specifies a longer reimbursement period. Because you have already had this condition repaired, you do not need to take your vehicle to your dealer for this recall. |
| Do you have questions? | If you have questions or concerns that your dealer is unable to resolve, please contact the appropriate Customer Assistance Center at the number listed below. |

GM Recall #12213
SEOCONTENT-END
Q&A FOR UPCOMING SAFETY RECALL 12213
2011-2012 CHEVROLET
CRUZE POSSIBLE LOSS OF BRAKE ASSIST
Q1. What is the condition being covered?
A1. Certain 2011–2012 model year Chevrolet
Cruze vehicles equipped with 1.4L
DOHC gasoline turbo engine (LUJ) and 6T40 FWD automatic transmission (MH8) have a condition in which the electric vacuum pump switch may fail to activate the vacuum pump as intended. If this occurs, brake system vacuum assist may be reduced resulting in unexpected increased brake pedal effort or stopping distance. If this happens while the vehicle is moving, a crash could result without prior warning.
Q2. How did you discover the condition?
A2. A field report for a brake performance complaint.
Q3. Have there been any reports from the field of fires, crashes or injuries related to this condition?
A3. There are 27 reports alleging low-speed crashes in our records, but none are verified. No injuries have been reported.
Q4. Where were these vehicles made?
A4. Lordstown, Ohio
Q5. Where were these vehicles sold?
A5. United States (292,879), Canada (44,789) and 641 exported to Israel.
Q6. Is my vehicle safe to drive?
A6. Yes. From a cold start, there have been reports of unexpected increased brake pedal effort resulting in increased stopping distance. The engine itself is the main source of vacuum brake assist, so under most conditions, a driver will have full brake assist. However, in rare instances, you may need to exert more brake pressure to stop normally.
Q7. If this is an upcoming recall, why are you announcing before the bulletin is released or before the parts become available?
A7. We wanted to inform customers of the issue because of its unexpected nature.
Q8. When will I be able to get my vehicle repaired and how much will it cost me?
A8. When parts become available, you will be notified by First Class mail. Dealers will remove and replace a microswitch in the power brake vacuum pipe assembly. Repairs will be performed free of charge because most vehicles should still be under factory warranty.
Q9. Who is the supplier of the affected part/component?
A9. GM does not disclose this type of information.
Q10. What part or parts are involved?
A10. Electric vacuum pump (EVP) switch
Q11. Are parts available? If not, when will they be available?
A11. We are working closely with the supplier to expedite availability.
Q12. I am not experiencing the condition or issue that is described, but I don’t feel safe driving the vehicle. What should I do?
A12. Paraphrase answer to No. 6

My daughter has a 2012 Chevrolet Cruz. It had the brake vacumn micro switch replaced on a recall at 50,000 miles. Now at 84,000 miles it failed and she was involved in a wreck because she had no brakes to stop. This is serious. She could have been killed. She rear ended a Yukon!!! She hasn’t had a car for 6 weeks since they are investigating. How can I feel safe putting her back in that car if those switches that they replace are still faulty?
Make sure to file a complaint with the NHTSA https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/
