Summary
This Preliminary information communicates that when a customer or technician attempts to add a new transmitter to a vehicle following the adding transmitters without Service Programming System procedure the procedure will not complete and a message “Remote Learn Pending” will be displayed on the Driver Information Center. In the past to perform the new transmitter procedure only one previously learned transmitter was required but this is no longer the case. Now, two previously learned transmitters are required to be placed into the cup holder and then the new transmitter to be programmed placed in the transmitter pocket. If this new procedure is not followed, the “adding transmitters without Service Programming System” cannot be performed. The technician will be forced to add a transmitter using Service Programming System.

Condition / Concern
A customer or technician may indicate when attempting to add a new transmitter or key to a
vehicle following the adding transmitters without SPS procedure. The procedure will not
complete, a message “Remote Learn Pending” will be displayed on the DIC, and if a keyed
ignition, the key will not start the vehicle and the theft security light will remain on.
Recommendations / Instructions
Quick Learn Procedure for 2017 Keyed Models
New for 2017, two keys that are already programmed need to be present in order to use the
quick learn procedure for adding keys to GM models, excluding 2017 Acadia Limited,
Enclave, Traverse, Express and Savana. On 2016 and earlier models, only one learned key is
needed to perform the quick learn procedure
Programming Additional Keys
To program a new key for keyed vehicles:
1. Insert the original, already programmed key in the ignition and turn the key to ON/RUN.
2. Turn the key to LOCK/OFF, and remove the key.
3. Within five seconds, insert the second already programmed key in the ignition and turn
it to ON/RUN.
4. Turn the key to LOCK/OFF, and remove the key.
5. Within five seconds, insert the new key to be programmed and turn it to ON/RUN. The
theft security light will turn off once the key has been programmed.
6. Repeat these steps to program additional keys.
TIP: If only one learned key is present, SPS must be used to add additional keys. The quick
learn procedure will not complete with only one learned key. Using only one key for the quick
learn procedure will cause the theft security light to illuminate when attempting to start the
vehicle.
The adding keys procedure does not erase any keys prior to programming. The procedure
will simply program the key into the next available slot. Use this procedure when adding an
additional key to the vehicle.
If all keys are lost, the 30 minute learn procedure should be used. Once a key is learned with
this procedure, all previously known keys will no longer work with the vehicle.
If keys/fobs of vehicles with under 100 miles are lost or damaged in transit/transportation to
the dealership, use labor code 0500010.
Two Fobs Needed for RKE Transmitter Quick Learn on 2017 Models
For 2017 model year vehicles, excluding Acadia Limited, Enclave, Traverse , Express and
Savana models, adding a new Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter, or key fob, using the
quick learn procedure requires that two previously learned transmitters be present.
TIP: If only one transmitter is present, the procedure will not complete and a Remote Learn
Pending message will display on the vehicle’s Driver Information Center. The new transmitter
will not be learned and cannot be reprogrammed.
If only one transmitter is available, use SPS to add a new transmitter to the vehicle instead
of the quick learn procedure.
On 2016 and earlier model years, only one previously learned transmitter is needed to be
present to perform the quick learn procedure.
Programming Additional Transmitters
The Adding Transmitters, also referred to as Adding Keys, programming does not erase any
keys. The programming simply adds a key into the next available slot. Up to eight
transmitters can be learned to a single vehicle. If a new transmitter is being learned to
replace a damaged, inoperative, or stolen transmitter, follow the Replacing Transmitters
procedure found in SI to ensure that an old transmitter cannot be used.
Before performing the quick learn procedure to add a transmitter, verify all mechanical keys
operate correctly in the door.
The quick learn procedure typically requires the two previously learned transmitters to be
placed in the vehicle cupholder in the center console or to turn the ignition on/off with both
transmitters.
To initiate programming, each new transmitter is placed in the transmitter pocket, which is
located in the center console storage compartment. The ignition is turned to the ON position
(do not crank the engine). The vehicle theft light on the instrument cluster will turn off or
the Driver Information Center will indicate the key/transmitter is learned.
Be sure to keep other transmitters at least 12 inches (30 cm) away from the ignition switch
or transmitter pocket while learning.
Refer to the appropriate Service Information for complete details on RKE transmitter
programming for each specific GM model.
Warranty Information
For wiring repairs covered under warranty, please refer to latest version of bulletin 10-00-
89-005 for warranty information on wire/connector repairs.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is
resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

Reprogramming
GM Diagnostic/Programming (TIS2Web)
Approved J2534 Device with TIS2WEB can reprogram 1996 and later All GM Modules.
To obtain the latest electronic controller calibration information for your vehicle, go to https://tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web and enter the vehicle's 17 character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and select 'Get CAL ID’.
You can then compare the latest part number with the actual number installed on the vehicle to determine if a reprogram is needed.
The Service Programming System (SPS) application is part of the TIS2Web system. To program an ECU, the SPS application must communicate with the vehicle control modules using the proper J2534 programming interface tool.
The Tech 2 supports model years 1996 and beyond. With the addition of the CAN Diagnostic Interface (CANdi) module, Tech 2 is fully backward compatible with current Tech 2 functionality and operates transparently when diagnosing non-CAN-equipped vehicles.
Servicing the next generation Global A vehicles will require the diagnostic software, GDS2, Global Diagnostic System 2 running on a local PC device while the MDI is connected to the vehicle. The GM MDI is the Global Diagnostic tool for future vehicles starting with Global A vehicles.
The GM MDI was introduced in the fall of 2007 for Pass-Thru programming and offers faster programming speed. It can be used to perform Pass-Thru programming on all vehicles built since 1996 and into the future. Click here to view a list of GDS supported vehicles.
