Module reprogramming labor operations are used to
submit warranty transactions for reprogramming
(without replacement) of a control module with new or
updated software and/or calibration files using the TIS
Service Programming System (SPS) application. These
labor operations are only applicable for control modules
that have valid service software/calibration files
released and are not to be used when replacing a
module.
Confirming Correct Labor Operations Using the
Warranty Claim Code
Please refer to the vehicle specific Labor Time Guide
for the list of applicable Reprogramming with SPS labor
codes. The following chart can be used to confirm that
you are submitting a warranty transaction with the
correct labor operation. Match the first two digits of the

Warranty Transaction Information
When a module is reprogrammed using SPS
reprogramming, the Warranty Claim Code from the
“Programming Complete” screen is required to be
entered in the “SPS Warranty Claim Code” field on the
transaction. DTC information (if applicable) must also
be included in the Cause field of the transaction.
Page 4 June, 2019 Bulletin No.: 06-08-47-001O

The Warranty Claim Code will display in SPS (example
above) after a successful programming event and
should be accurately and legibly documented on the
job card by the technician.
Bulletin No.: 06-08-47-001O June, 2019 Page 5
5164840
An SPS pop up message (example above – Code
M6991 Same Cal Blocking) may advise the technician
that they are trying to reprogram a module with the
same calibration. Reprogramming with the same
calibration is not considered a valid warranty repair and
the Warranty Claim Code should not be used to submit
warranty or policy transactions. Note: Follow the
specific instructions on any Field Action Bulletin when
encountering this type of SPS alert. If the alert displays
a Warranty Claim Code, document it on the job card.
The Code will be necessary in situations where a
transaction must be resubmitted to close the Field
Action. For further information on SPS warnings
regarding reprogramming a module with the current
calibration, please refer to Bulletin 17-NA-242.
The Warranty Claim Code is only available when using
the TIS-2-Web application. The CD or stand-alone
version of TIS does not support the Warranty
Claim Code.
Some control modules will require programming to be
completed by using a USB memory stick with uploaded
files from the TIS2 Web application. The programming
to the USB memory stick will generate a Warranty
Claim Code.
To avoid warranty transaction rejections:
• The VIN and the job card number on the
transaction must match the VIN and job card
number associated with the reprogramming event
in the SPS system.
• The SPS Warranty Claim Code must be
accurately entered in the “SPS Warranty Claim
Code” field of the transaction.
• When more than one Warranty Claim Code is
generated for a programming event, it is required
to document all Warranty Claim Codes in the
“Correction” field on the job card. Dealers must
also enter one of the codes in the “SPS Warranty
Claim Code” field of the transaction, otherwise the
transaction will reject. It is best practice to enter
the FINAL code provided by SPS.
Warranty Claim Code Retrieval
Information
If the SPS Warranty Claim Code was not recorded on
the job card, the code can be retrieved in the SPS
system as follows:
1. Open up TIS on the computer used to program the
vehicle.
2. Select and start “Service Programming
System (SPS).”
3. Select “Settings.”
4. Select “Warranty Claim Code” tab.

Warranty Claim Codes. Search by VIN and/or the date/
time of the programming event.SEOCONTENT-END

Reprogramming
GM Diagnostic/Programming (TIS2Web)
Approved J2534 Device with TIS2WEB can reprogram 1996 and later All GM Modules.
To obtain the latest electronic controller calibration information for your vehicle, go to https://tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web and enter the vehicle's 17 character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and select 'Get CAL ID’.
You can then compare the latest part number with the actual number installed on the vehicle to determine if a reprogram is needed.
The Service Programming System (SPS) application is part of the TIS2Web system. To program an ECU, the SPS application must communicate with the vehicle control modules using the proper J2534 programming interface tool.
The Tech 2 supports model years 1996 and beyond. With the addition of the CAN Diagnostic Interface (CANdi) module, Tech 2 is fully backward compatible with current Tech 2 functionality and operates transparently when diagnosing non-CAN-equipped vehicles.
Servicing the next generation Global A vehicles will require the diagnostic software, GDS2, Global Diagnostic System 2 running on a local PC device while the MDI is connected to the vehicle. The GM MDI is the Global Diagnostic tool for future vehicles starting with Global A vehicles.
The GM MDI was introduced in the fall of 2007 for Pass-Thru programming and offers faster programming speed. It can be used to perform Pass-Thru programming on all vehicles built since 1996 and into the future. Click here to view a list of GDS supported vehicles.
