Summary
This Preliminary Information communication advises the technician vehicles equipped with Regular Production Option Code MME if the Dexron HP synthetic fluid in the 1ET35 Transmission
appears to be overheated or extremely dark in color. Technician will not replace the transmission
or the transmission cooler. Technician will not recommend flushing the transmission
or transmission cooler based only on the appearance of the transmission fluid. If the transmission
is operating as designed (no noise or vibration from the transmission
when operated, no debris is found in the fluid the transmission
, etc.) but there is a Diagnostic Trouble Code found, follow current Service Information diagnostic procedure or continue with diagnosis of the concern.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition / Concern
A technician may comment that the Dexron HP synthetic fluid in the 1ET35 Transmission
appears to be overheated or extremely dark in color.
Recommendations / Instructions
DO NOT replace the Transmission
, Transmission Cooler or recommend flushing the Transmission
or Transmission Cooler based only on the appearance of the Transmission Fluid.
If the Transmission
is operating as designed (no noise or vibration from the Transmission
when operated, no debris is found in the fluid the Transmission
, etc.) but there is a DTC found, follow current Global Service Information (G.S.I.) diagnostic procedure or continue with diagnosis of the concern.
The Transmission Fluid in the 1ET35 may turn dark after mileage is accrued on the vehicle. If the transmission fluid appears dark, do not assume that the transmission
is damaged internally.
The photo below is an example showing a comparison between new and used Dexron HP fluid and extreme discoloration found in a perfectly operating unit after 15,000 miles of operation.
Please Take a Sample and compare it to the Picture.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is
resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
