Summary
This Preliminary information communicates the possibility of a normal balance shaft gear whine noise to exist in the engine
and is normally most audible at or above 1500rpm. This noise does not create any reliabilty or durability issues with the engine.
Condition:
Whine noise heard from engine area most noticeable off idle
Cause:
Normal Balance Shaft gear noise
Correction
You may encounter a vehicle that has a audible whine noise between 1000-2500rpm coming from under the hood area both hot and cold.
This noise could be mistaken for a generator bearing noise or turbocharger noise.
If you experience this type of noise use a stethoscope to see if the noise can be isolated to the lower oil pan area or transmission bell housing area.
If so, this noise is likely being generated by the balance shaft gear to gear interaction and should be considered normal operation at this time.
This noise will not cause any durability or reliability issues with the engine.
