Summary

IsuzueBay logo Motors Limited (IsuzueBay logo) is recalling certain 2022-2023 IsuzueBay logo NQR, NRR, 2022 ChevroleteBay logo Low Cab Forward (LCF) 5500HD, 2022-2023 ChevroleteBay logo LCF 5500XD, and 2023 Hino S52 vehicles. Remedy

Dealers will recalibrate the ADAS camera and ABS module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 17, 2023. Owners may contact IsuzueBay logo customer service at 1-866-441-9638. IsuzueBay logo’s number for this recall is V2301.

Product Safety Recall
N232396501 ABS Module and Frontview Camera Module Reprogramming

Release Date: August 2023
Revision: 00

Condition

IsuzueBay logo Motors Limited has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2023 model year ChevroleteBay logo Low Cab Forward 5500HD/XD Medium Duty vehicles with 200 inch or 212 inch wheelbase. For these vehicles, the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) camera and ABS (Antilock Brake System) module were not calibrated according to the correct wheelbase. Therefore, when driving in a curve certain ADAS features and the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) system working together with the ABS module may not function properly. If the ADAS camera and ABS module are not calibrated to the correct wheelbase option, one or more of the following events could occur – in each case, increasing the risk of a crash:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking System (AEBS) activation (as well as the AEBS warning light) may be delayed when driving in a curve and therefore the AEBS may then decelerate the vehicle more aggressively when activated.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control may reduce following distance by about 8-10 m when driving in a curve.
  • ESC may activate in an understeer condition without illuminating brake lights.
  • ESC may delay activation in an oversteer condition, increasing potential for an oversteer event to occur.

Correction

Dealers will recalibrate (1) the ADAS camera to the correct wheelbase of the vehicles, and (2) the ABS module so the ESC system will function properly with the affected vehicles’ wheelbases.

Parts

No parts are required.

DET-23-015 V2301

Chronology of Defect / Noncompliance Determination 573.6 (c) (6) (7)

Describe the chronology of events leading up to the defect decision or test data for the noncompliance decision: (2000)

On July 26, 2021, IsuzueBay logo Motors Limited (IML) began production in Japan of interim 2022MY N-Series Diesel vehicles, which, unlike the earlier 2022 MY vehicles (produced between January 2021 to July 2021), were equipped with ESC as standard equipment, and optionally equipped with new ADAS technology. ESC is standard equipment on all subject vehicles and later model year N-Series Diesel vehicles. [ESC – Electronic Stability Control; ABS – Antilock Braking System; ADAS – Advanced Driver Assistance Systems]

In September 2021, the interim 2022 MY trucks equipped with ESC and in some cases the new ADAS technology began to ship to dealers, body builders and, in rare instances, customers from US ports.

On August 23, 2022, IsuzueBay logo Commercial Truck of America, Inc. (ICTA) received a question from an independent upfitter who was engaging in a frame modification (wheelbase extension) about whether the ADAS camera needed to be recalibrated.

Between August 23 and September 6, 2022, various engineering and product planning groups within IsuzueBay logo began looking into the issue – in connection with the IsuzueBay logo factory option to have the frames of the subject vehicles extended from a wheelbase of 176 inches to 200 or 212 inches whether those extended vehicles needed to have the ADAS recalibrated.

On September 6, 2022, IsuzueBay logo North America Corporation (INAC) QA and IML launched an investigation. This investigation involved an initial detailed study and then in-depth vehicle testing, which confirmed in late December that the ADAS and ESC systems in the subject vehicles whose frames were extended from wheelbase 176 inches to 200 or 212 inches could be affected by a lack of recalibration.

In the first week of January 2023, INAC received confirmation from IML that a recalibration is required for both the ADAS camera and the ABS module as it affects ESC for all interim 2022MY and 2023MY N-Series Diesel trucks receiving the wheelbase extension from 176 inches to 200 or 212 inches. The potential effect on ESC-equipped and ADAS-equipped vehicles receiving a wheelbase modification from and to a different length (which would be from an independent upfitter, not part of IsuzueBay logo’s program) is still under investigation.

On January 10, 2023, based on the above results, INAC QA travelled to both frame modification facilities that carry out the “factory option” frame extensions on behalf of IsuzueBay logo and trained the staff so all modified trucks produced after 1/10/2023 have the ADAS and ESC systems properly calibrated.

On January 13, 2023, IsuzueBay logo made a determination to conduct a safety recall to address this issue in the affected vehicles in the field.

IsuzueBay logo has received no warranty claims related to this issue and is not aware of any crashes or injuries associated with this issue.
