Passenger Air Bag May Deploy with Child in Seat
In the event of a crash, a front passenger air bag that deploys with a child or infant in the front passenger seat can increase their risk of injury.

Summary
General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2023 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles equipped with ventilated front passenger seats. The Occupant Classification System may not properly disable the front passenger air bag when there is a small child or child restraint detected in the seat.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the passenger presence system, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 24, 2023. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM’s number for this recall is N222388911.

Condition
General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in a small number of 2023 model year Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles equipped with ventilated front seats. An Occupant Classification System (the “sensing system”) in these vehicles is designed to disable the front passenger airbag if a small child or child restraint is detected in the seat. The vent assemblies in these seats may be missing certain foam spacers, which under certain conditions may cause the sensing system not to properly disable the airbag. If the sensing system is not able to properly identify an occupant in the front passenger seat, the airbag may deploy in a crash when the occupant protection strategy was to disable the airbag, increasing the risk of injury.
Correction
Dealers will replace the passenger presence system which includes the ventilation assembly.

The front passenger airbag “ON/OFF” status indicator will correctly show whether the front passenger airbag is enabled or disabled.

Q10) If customers are concerned, can they get a rental car or courtesy transportation?
Courtesy transportation is available for customers whose vehicles are involved in this recall and are within the warranty coverage period for the warranty which is associated with this recall. Please refer to Warranty Administration Bulletin #17-NA-073: Field Action Courtesy Transportation Policy for further information.
Chronology :
GM opened a formal investigation on November 4, 2022 after GM’s “tier 1” seat assembly supplier notified GM that the supplier had discovered ventilated passenger seats with spacer foam missing in the seat vent assembly, and that seats without these spacers may have been shipped to GM’s assembly plant.
GM’s investigator met with both the seat supplier and the “tier 2” seat-vent supplier, as well as GM technical experts, to evaluate whether suspect seats had been shipped to GM, and the potential effect of missing spacers on performance of the front-passenger-airbag Occupant Classification System. Based on this analysis, GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) decided to conduct a safety recall on December 8, 2022. GM is not aware of any field incidents related to this condition.

An Occupant Classification System (the “sensing system”) in these vehicles is designed to disable the front passenger airbag if a small child or child restraint is detected in the seat. The vent assemblies in these seats may be missing certain foam spacers, which under certain conditions may cause the sensing system not to properly disable the airbag. GM’s investigator met with both the seat supplier and the “tier 2” seat-vent supplier, as well as GM technical experts, to evaluate whether suspect seats had been shipped to GM, and the potential effect of missing spacers on performance of the front-passenger-airbag Occupant Classification System. Based on this analysis, GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) decided to conduct a safety recall on December 8, 2022. GM is not aware of any field incidents related to this condition. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Dealers will replace the passenger presence system which includes the ventilation assembly. Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 573.13(d)(1), all covered vehicles are under warranty, so reimbursement is not offered.
