Summary
This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician some vehicles may have a Service Stabilitrak message and a red brake lamp illuminated on the Instrument Panel Cluster. Technician may find a Diagnostic Trouble Code C0196 in the Electronic Brake Control Module. This concern may be preset after the vehicle was flat towed or just came off a car carrier. Technician will need to perform a Multi Axis sensor learn and a Diagnostic Trouble Code clear in the Electronic Brake Control Module. Then shut ignition off, open and close driver door and let vehicle sit for 3 minutes. After the vehicle has slept for 3 minutes start the vehicle and let it run in park for 10 seconds. Now the vehicle will need to be driven for 30 seconds over 20 miles per hour. If code is cleared and doesn’t reset, release the vehicle to the customer. If code resets follow normal diagnosis in Service Information.

Vehicle that has a Service Stabilitrak message and a red brake lamp illuminated on the IPC with DTC C0196 set in the EBCM after the vehicle came off the car carrier from the assembly plant or after the vehicle was flat towed on a wrecker.
This may be caused by the vehicle not going fully to sleep after the vehicle has been driven on a flat bed truck or transport vehicle.
The EBCM sees the vehicle in motion but the wheel speed sensors and steering wheel position sensor is not changing as the transport vehicle is turning which causes the vehicle to set a C0196 code that will not go to history after the ignition switch is cycled.

Condition/Concern
Some dealer may notice a vehicle that has a Service Stabilitrak message and a red brake lamp illuminated on the IPC with DTC C0196 set in the EBCM after the vehicle came off the car carrier from the assembly plant or after the vehicle was flat towed on a wrecker
This may be caused by the vehicle not going fully to sleep after the vehicle has been driven on a flat bed truck or transport vehicle.
The EBCM sees the vehicle in motion but the wheel speed sensors and steering wheel position sensor is not changing as the transport vehicle is turning which causes the vehicle to set a C0196 code that will not go to history after the ignition switch is cycled.
Recommendation/Instructions
To erase the code,
- Perform an Multi Axis sensor learn and a DTC clear in the EBCM
- Then shut ignition off, open and close driver door and let vehicle sit for 3 minutes (to confirm it has gone to sleep)
- Start vehicle, Leave vehicle in park for at least 10 seconds
- Shift to drive, drive the vehicle above 20 mph relatively straight for 30 seconds.
- If code is cleared and doesn’t reset, release the vehicle to the customer. If code resets, follow normal diagnosis
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
