Summary
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain replacement flip-key ignition transmitter assemblies sold as replacement equipment for 2010-2015 Chevrolet Camaro vehicles. GM dealers may have inadvertently sold these assemblies as replacement keys despite them having been recalled under NHTSA recall number 14V-436 (GM number 14294) when they were the original equipment assemblies. The driver may accidentally bump the ignition key with their knee, moving the ignition out of the run position and turning off the engine.
Remedy
GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, replace the key with the flat blade design, free of charge. Interim notices informing owners of the safety risk were mailed November 6, 2019. Owners received a second notice and the recall began February 4, 2020. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM’s number for this recall is N192223230.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
February 2020
This notice applies to your vehicle, VIN: _____________________________________
Dear General Motors Customer:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain flip key/RKE transmitter assemblies that may have been sold as replacement keys for 2010 – 2015 model year Chevrolet Camaro vehicles. As a result, GM is conducting a safety recall. We apologize for this inconvenience. However, we are concerned about your safety and continued satisfaction with our products.
IMPORTANT
- Your vehicle is involved in GM safety recall N192223230.
- Schedule an appointment with your GM dealer.
- This service will be performed for you at no charge.
Why is your vehicle being recalled? | Our records indicate that you may have been sold the recalled flip key/RKE transmitter assembly. There is a risk that some drivers may bump the ignition “flip” key with their knee and unintentionally move the “flip” key away from the “run” position. If this occurs, engine power, and power braking will be affected, and power steering may be affected increasing the risk of a crash. If the ignition switch is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury or fatality. |
What will we do? | Your GM dealer will remove the key blade from the original flip key/RKE transmitter assemblies provided with your vehicle, and provide two new keys and two key rings per key. This service will be performed for you at no charge. Because of service scheduling requirements, it is likely that your dealer will need your vehicle longer than the actual service correction time of approximately 55 minutes. |
What should you do? | To order the parts needed for your vehicle, your <DIV_DLR> dealer will need your vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The VIN has 17 alpha-numeric characters and is shown imprinted on a tag on the top of the driver’s side instrument panel where the windshield and instrument panel meet.
Please provide this information to your dealer as soon as possible. When the parts arrive, your dealer will contact you to arrange a service appointment. When you arrive for your appointment, please bring proof of vehicle ownership and both sets of keys with their RKE transmitters. Until the recall has been performed, it is very important that you adjust your seat and steering column to allow clearance between your knee and the ignition key. |
Did you already pay for this repair? | Even though you may have previously had repairs for this condition, you will still need to take your vehicle to your dealer for additional repairs. If you have already paid for repairs for the recall condition, please complete the enclosed reimbursement form and present it to your dealer with all required documents. Working with your dealer will expedite your request, however, if this is not convenient, you may mail the completed reimbursement form and all required documents to Reimbursement Department, PO Box 33170, Detroit, MI 48232-5170. The completed form and required documents must be presented to your dealer or received by the Reimbursement Department by February 28, 2021, unless state law specifies a longer reimbursement period. |
Do you have questions? | If you have questions or concerns that your dealer is unable to resolve, please contact the appropriate Customer Assistance Center at the number listed below. |
If after contacting your dealer and the Customer Assistance Center, you are still not satisfied we have done our best to remedy this condition without charge and within a reasonable time, you may wish to write the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE, Washington, DC 20590, or call the toll-free Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1.888.327.4236 (TTY 1.800.424.9153), or go to https://www.safercar.gov. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Campaign ID Number for this recall is 19E064.

Dealer Responsibility – For USA & Export (USA States, Territories, and Possessions)
It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by this notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied.
The US National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act provides that each vehicle that is subject to a recall of this type must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the customer has tendered it for repair. A failure to repair within sixty days after tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time. If the condition is not adequately repaired within a reasonable time, the customer may be entitled to an identical or reasonably equivalent vehicle at no charge or to a refund of the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation. To avoid having to provide these burdensome remedies, every effort must be made to promptly schedule an appointment with each customer and to repair their vehicle as soon as possible. In the recall notification letters, customers are told how to contact the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration if the recall is not completed within a reasonable time.
Dealer Responsibility – All
All new, used, GM Certified Used, courtesy transportation vehicles, dealer shuttle vehicles, etc. in dealers’ possession and subject to this recall must be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this bulletin before customers take possession of these vehicles. Involved vehicles must be held and not delivered to customers, dealer-traded, released to auction, used for demonstration, or any other purpose.
All GM Certified Used vehicles currently in the dealers’ inventory within the Certified Pre-Owned Inventory System (CPOIS) will be de-certified and must be held and remedied per the service procedure in this bulletin. Upon submitting an accepted/paid warranty transaction in the Global Warranty Management (GWM) system, the vehicle can be re-certified for sale within the CPOIS system, or once again be used in the CTP program.
Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this recall at no charge to customers, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.
Customers who have recently purchased vehicles sold from your vehicle inventory, and for which there is no customer information indicated on the dealer listing, are to be contacted by the dealer. Arrangements are to be made to make the required correction according to the instructions contained in this bulletin. A copy of the customer letter is provided in this bulletin for your use in contacting customers. Recall follow-up cards should not be used for this purpose, since the customer may not as yet have received the notification letter.
In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this recall enters your vehicle inventory or is in your dealership for service in the future, you must take the steps necessary to be sure the recall correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.
Dealer Reports
For dealers with involved vehicles, a listing with involved vehicles has been prepared and will be provided to U.S. and Canadian dealers through the GM GlobalConnect Recall Reports or sent directly to export dealers. The listing may contain customer names and addresses obtained from Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any purpose other than follow-up necessary to complete this recall is a violation of law in several states/provinces/countries. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this report to the follow-up necessary to complete this recall.
Courtesy Transportation – For USA & Canada
Courtesy transportation is available for customers whose vehicles are involved in a product program and still within the warranty coverage period. See General Motors Service Policies and Procedures Manual, Sections 1.4 and 6.1.10, for courtesy transportation program details.

Customer Notification
USA & Canada – General Motors will notify customers of this recall on their vehicle (see copy of customer letter included with this bulletin).
Export – Letters will be sent to known owners of record located within areas covered by the US National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. For owners outside these areas, dealers should notify customers using the attached sample letter.
Customer Reimbursement
Customer requests for reimbursement of previously paid repairs to correct the condition described in this bulletin are to be submitted to the dealer prior to or by February 28, 2021. See General Motors Service Policies and Procedures Manual, Section 6.1.11 – Product Field Action Customer Reimbursement Procedure (USA & Canada) or local Policies and Procedures, for details.
GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a “do-it-yourselfer”. They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the tools, equipment, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

IMPORTANT
• Your vehicle is involved in GM safety recall N192223230.
• Schedule an appointment with your GM dealer.
• This service will be performed for you at no charge.

STOP DELIVERY ORDER
Effective immediately, stop the delivery of certain 2010-2015 model year Chevrolet Camaro vehicles in new or used vehicle inventory. General Motors has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about an upcoming safety recall that involves these vehicles. The GM recall number is N192223230.
It is a violation of federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by this notification until the defect is remedied.
General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain flip key/RKE transmitter assemblies that may have been sold as replacement keys for 2010 – 2015 model year Chevrolet Camaro vehicles. GM previously recalled these flip key/RKE transmitter assemblies, which were sold as original equipment with 2010 – 2014 model year Chevrolet Camaro vehicles (NHTSA recall 14V346). GM dealers may have inadvertently sold these flip key/RKE transmitter assemblies as replacement keys for 2010 – 2015 model year Chevrolet Camaro vehicles.
When parts are available, the dealers will inspect, and if necessary, replace the flip key with the flat blade design key as defined in Safety Recall 14V346 (14294).
Until further instructions are received, involved vehicles that are in dealers’ possession (new or used vehicle inventory, GM Certified Used, courtesy transportation vehicles, dealer shuttle vehicles, etc.) must be held and not delivered to customers, dealer-traded, released to auction, used for demonstration purposes or any other dealer use. All GM Certified Used vehicles currently in the dealers’ inventory within the Certified Pre-Owned Inventory System (CPOIS) will be de-certified.
The Investigate Vehicle History (IVH) screen in the Global Warranty Management (GWM) system will be updated for this upcoming recall on September 19, 2019. This action has been taken to assist dealers with determining which vehicles are involved so they can properly respond to customer inquiries.
A list of involved vehicles that have been identified as being in dealer new vehicle inventory is attached to this message. It is sorted by dealer Business Associate Code (BAC) for easy reference. Your dealership’s BAC will not be listed if none of the involved vehicles are currently in your new vehicle inventory. A file identifying involved vehicles in dealer used inventory will be published in GM GlobalConnect, under the Service tab in Field Action Inventory Reports.
Question and Answer Document (Q&A)
Attached to this message you will find a document that addresses the ten most likely questions customers may have regarding this Safety Recall. Please use this information as an aid to confidently answer customer concerns.
Until the recall bulletin is released, the Investigate Vehicle History (IVH) screen in the Global Warranty Management (GWM) system will display “N/A” under Release Date and “Incomplete – Remedy not yet available” under Status. This means the required repair is not yet available and dealers should not attempt to perform any repairs.
We are working with the supplier to obtain the required parts as quickly as possible. When a sufficient quantity of parts are available, the recall bulletin will be released and dealers can begin repairing vehicles.

GM Recall: #N192223230
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for Safety Recall N192223230
Incorrect Service Ignition Key
These questions and answers are being provided to help GM dealers respond to inquiries from involved vehicle owners about the Safety recall identified above.
Q1) | What equipment is involved? |
A1) | Flip key/RKE transmitter assemblies that may have been sold as replacement keys for 2010-2015 Chevrolet Camaro.
|
Q2) | What is the issue or condition? |
A2) | General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain flip key/RKE transmitter assemblies that may have been sold as replacement keys for 2010 – 2015 model year Chevrolet Camaro vehicles.
|
Q3) | What symptoms may be experienced? What warning signs may be associated with the issue or condition described? |
A3) | If these keys are used in the subject vehicles, there is a risk, under certain conditions, that some drivers may bump the key with their knee and unintentionally move the key away from the “run” position. If this occurs, engine power, and power braking will be affected, and power steering may be affected, increasing the risk of a crash. The timing of the key movement out of the “run” position, relative to the activation of the sensing algorithm of the crash event, may result in the airbags not deploying, increasing the potential for occupant injury in certain kinds of crashes. GM is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities attributable to flip key/RKE transmitter assemblies sold as replacement keys.
|
Q4) | What is the remedy/repair? |
A4) | Dealers will inspect the customer’s key to determine the configuration. If the customer is using a flip key, then the dealer will replace the key with the flat blade design key as defined in Safety Recall 14V346 (14294).
|
Q5) | What is the safety risk? Is the vehicle safe to drive? |
A5) | If these keys are used in the subject vehicles, there is a risk, under certain conditions, that some drivers may bump the key with their knee and unintentionally move the key away from the “run” position. GM previously provided notice to dealers and owners of 2010 – 2014 model year Chevrolet Camaro vehicles that these keys were being recalled and replaced, including warnings regarding the risks of kneeto-key interaction relating to this flip key/RKE transmitter assembly. GM is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities attributable to flip key/RKE transmitter assemblies sold as replacement keys.
|
Q6) | Does the customer have to pay for this remedy/repair? |
A6) | No, this inspection/repair will be done at no cost to the customer.
|
Q7) | Is the remedy/repair available now? |
A7) | Yes, the remedy/repair is available now, please see the attached bulletin for details.
|
Q8) | What should customers do until recall repairs can be completed? Are there any special instructions? |
A8) | If special instructions are provided, they will be included in the notification letters to customers. Until the recall is performed, customers should adjust their seat and steering column to allow clearance between their knee and the ignition key.
|
Q9) | How can customers check to see if their key is involved in this field action? |
A9) | Customers who own a key involved in the field action will be notified by mail by General Motors, but they may also check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for field actions in GM Owner Center at https://my.gm.com/recalls or via NHTSA’s website at https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/.
|
Q10) | If customers are concerned, can they get a rental car or courtesy transportation? |
A10) | Courtesy transportation is available for customers whose vehicles are involved in this recall and are within the warranty coverage period for the warranty which is associated with this recall. Please refer to Warranty Administration Bulletin #17-NA-073: Field Action Courtesy Transportation Policy for further information.
