This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about customer that want an aftermarket trailer brake controller or where the harness is located. To connect a trailer brake controller, a harness is needed that will plug into the X6 position of the Left Instrument Panel Junction Block (X61A), located under driver?s side dash near the parking brake pedal assembly.

The information in this PI replaces PIT5228 and PI1105. Please discard PIT5228 and PI1105.
Chevrolet and GMC models listed below equipped with trailering package RPO Z82 (but without RPO JL1) were shipped to dealers without an electric trailer brake controller harness used for the installation of an aftermarket trailer brake controller.

Availability of Trailer Brake Controller Harness
- Trailer Brake Controller harnesses are being shipped to dealers from the Warranty Parts Center (WPC) for vehicles in dealer inventory. This shipment began March 1, 2014 via UPS 3-Day Shipping. Please add this harness to the vehicle when parts are received. Additional information and a complete listing of affected VINs can be found in dealer message G_0000186218, dated March 7, 2014. Dealers in Canada should refer to message number G_0000186592.
- If a vehicle assigned to your dealership has been sold or dealer traded, please make arrangements to provide the customer or the selling dealer with the harness when received.
- For customers of previously purchased vehicles, GM will mail the harness directly to customers of record.
Information on Installation of an Aftermarket (Non-GM) Trailer Brake Controller
As stated above: the shipped harness is for use in connecting an aftermarket trailer brake controller. An instruction sheet for installation is included in the package with the harness. Additionally, a label is applied to the harness that calls out the wire colors and each wire’s function.
For reference the harness is to be connected from the MID-BEC to an aftermarket trailer brake controller. The MID-BEC is located under the I/P to the left of the steering column. The harness connection point (1) is illustrated above. Complete instructions for customer installation of the harness are included in the harness packaging.
This information does not apply to trucks equipped with an integrated trailer brake control module (JL1).
If the customer wishes to have an aftermarket brake controller installed in their vehicle, it would be considered as a Customer Pay option.
