Condition/Concern
Some customers may comment that the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is illuminated.
During diagnosis, a technician may find that DTC P0420 is set or in history.
Recommendation/Instructions
If DTC P0420 is set, verify that the latest version of Product Emission – Reprogram Engine Control Module campaign (#14801) has been performed.
If campaign #14801A or greater has been performed, continue normal diagnosis referring to SI.
If campaign #14801A or greater has not been completed, perform the latest version of campaign #14801 and in addition complete the following:
- Install any components that have been removed or replaced during diagnosis.
- Perform any adjustments, programming or setup procedures that are required when a component is removed or replaced.
- Clear the DTCs with a scan tool.
- Turn OFF the ignition for 60 seconds.
- Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC.
- Verify the scan tool Catalyst Monitor Not At Idle Test Conditions Met parameter changes to Yes.
Note: If YES is not displayed. Refer to Step 5.
- When the conditions are safe, stop and idle the vehicle in gear (If equipped with automatic transmission) or neutral (If equipped with manual transmission).
- Verify the Catalyst Monitor Test Result parameter displays Pass when performing the steps listed below:
Note: When the test has completed, the Catalyst Monitor Test Counter parameter will increment by one and the Catalyst Monitor Test Result parameter will indicate Passed, Failed or No Result.
- Continue to monitor the parameter. When the parameter indicates Inactive, the Catalyst Monitor Test has completed.
Note: If the Catalyst Monitor Test Result parameter indicates No Result, repeat steps 5-8 until the Test Result parameter indicates Passed or Failed.
Note: If the Catalyst Monitor Test Result parameter indicates Failed, refer to Circuit/System Testing in SI.
- If the Catalyst Monitor Test Result parameter indicates Pass, system is all ok.

Reprogramming
GM Diagnostic/Programming (TIS2Web)
Approved J2534 Device with TIS2WEB can reprogram 1996 and later All GM Modules.
To obtain the latest electronic controller calibration information for your vehicle, go to https://tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web and enter the vehicle's 17 character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and select 'Get CAL ID’.
You can then compare the latest part number with the actual number installed on the vehicle to determine if a reprogram is needed.
The Service Programming System (SPS) application is part of the TIS2Web system. To program an ECU, the SPS application must communicate with the vehicle control modules using the proper J2534 programming interface tool.
The Tech 2 supports model years 1996 and beyond. With the addition of the CAN Diagnostic Interface (CANdi) module, Tech 2 is fully backward compatible with current Tech 2 functionality and operates transparently when diagnosing non-CAN-equipped vehicles.
Servicing the next generation Global A vehicles will require the diagnostic software, GDS2, Global Diagnostic System 2 running on a local PC device while the MDI is connected to the vehicle. The GM MDI is the Global Diagnostic tool for future vehicles starting with Global A vehicles.
