Brake Pressure Switch May Short and Cause Fire
An electrical short in the brake pressure switch can overheat the circuit and increase the risk of a fire while driving or parked.

Summary
General Motors. LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2019-2023 Chevrolet 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD Medium-Duty trucks. The brake pressure sensor assembly may leak brake fluid into the brake pressure switch and cause an electrical short-circuit.
Remedy
Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the master cylinder pressure sensor and inspect the wire harness, replacing it, if necessary, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed May 29, 2023. Second letters will be mailed once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM’s number for this recall is N222375270.

Q1) Which vehicles are involved?
Certain 2019 – 2023 model year Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty 4500HD/5500HD/6500HD vehicles
Q2)What is the issue or condition?
These vehicles may have a brake pressure sensor assembly that allows brake fluid to leak beyond the diaphragm seal into the pressure switch. The brake fluid may seep into the sensor’s electrical components and short the brake pressure switch and the associated fuse.
Q3) What symptoms may be experienced? What warning signs may be associated with the issue or condition described?
Until the recall remedy is performed, owners are advised to park their vehicles outdoors. This condition may declare with a “service brake system” malfunction indicator lamp.
Q4) What is the remedy/repair?
Dealers will replace the master cylinder pressure sensor. Dealers will also inspect the associated wire harness and replace if necessary.
Q5) What is the safety risk? Is the vehicle safe to drive?
If brake fluid shorts the brake pressure switch and the associated fuse, the circuit can generate excessive heat that could result in a fire, increasing the risk of injury. An underhood fire may occur when the vehicle is off and possibly unattended.
Q6) Does the customer have to pay for this remedy/repair?
No, this inspection/repair will be done at no cost to the customer.
Q7) Is the remedy/repair available now?
No, when a sufficient quantity of parts are available, the recall bulletin will be released, and dealers can begin repairing vehicles.
Q8) What should customers do until recall repairs can be completed? Are there any special instructions?
Until the recall remedy is performed, owners are advised to park their vehicles outdoors. This condition may declare with a “service brake system” malfunction indicator lamp.

Customers who own a vehicle involved in the field action will be notified by mail by General Motors, but they may also check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for field actions in GM Owner Center at https://my.gm.com/recalls or via NHTSA’s website at https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/.
Q10) If customers are concerned, can they get a rental car or courtesy transportation?
Courtesy transportation is not applicable to Medium Duty vehicles. Towing is covered to the nearest Chevrolet Medium Duty dealer if your vehicle cannot be driven because of a warrantied defect. Please refer to Warranty Administration Bulletin #07-00-89-037: Warranty Administration – GM Courtesy Transportation and Roadside Assistance Programs for further information.
Chronology :
On August 9, 2022, GM opened a product investigation following a claim of a vehicle fire on a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty vehicle. As part of that investigation, GM coordinated with Navistar, the manufacturer of the subject vehicles, to review field data and warranty returned brake pressure sensors.
While a series of tests failed to duplicate the SUFS vehicle’s condition, on January 25, 2023, a warranty returned sensor and harness was identified which exhibited signs of heat damage. This part was subjected to more detailed analysis, including X-ray scans which were completed on February 13, 2023, followed by chemistry laboratory analysis which was completed on February 28, 2023. The results from these analyses revealed the presence of brake fluid past the diaphragm seal, into the brake pressure switch and through the actual wire harness into the pump’s fuse circuit. Analysis of the returned components also revealed delamination of the corrosion inhibiting sealant, which allowed slow seepage of the brake fluid past the diaphragm seal.
On March 30, 2023, Navistar reported one potentially related field incident involving a part with alleged heat damage. On April 5, 2023, Navistar provided GM a list of potentially affected vehicle VINs.
On April 6, 2023, GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) decided to conduct a safety recall. GM’s final analysis of the field data, including legal claims, identified a total of twenty-one potentially related complaints, eleven of which alleged a fire, smoke, or flame. GM was provided notice of those events between July 26, 2021, and January 25, 2023.
GM is not aware of any accidents or injuries associated with this condition.

General Motors has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about a safety recall that involves these vehicles. The GM recall number is N222375270. It is a violation of federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by this notification until the defect is remedied. These vehicles may have a brake pressure sensor assembly that allows brake fluid to leak beyond the diaphragm seal into the pressure switch. The brake fluid may seep into the sensor’s electrical components and short the brake pressure switch and the associated fuse.
