Chronology :
On March 22, 2022, a worker at GM’s Spring Hill assembly plant submitted an issue to GM’s Speak Up For Safety (SUFS) program following discovery of a dislodged fuel tank rollover valve in a vehicle. Personnel at the plant determined that the issue was caused while performing a procedure to evaluate the integrity of a fuel pump connection inside the tank. Containment efforts were initiated at the plant, and 31 of the 708 contained vehicles were found to have the dislodged-valve condition.
GM opened a formal investigation on May 10, 2022. GM’s investigator confirmed that 298 vehicles may have been shipped from GM’s assembly plant with this condition, of which 228 are in the US. Between June 6 and 8, 2020, GM conducted laboratory tests to assess this condition’s potential to cause a fuel leak in various roll positions. GM determined that, when left in certain roll positions for an extended period of time (approximately 17 minutes), a dislodged valve could allow fluid to leak. GM’s review of field data did not identify any relevant field claims related to this condition. On June 16, 2022, GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) decided to conduct a safety recall.

Dealer Responsibility – For USA & Export (USA States, Territories, and Possessions) It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by this notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied. The US National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act provides that each vehicle that is subject to a recall of this type must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the customer has tendered it for repair. A failure to repair within sixty days after tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time. If the condition is not adequately repaired within a reasonable time, the customer may be entitled to an identical or reasonably equivalent vehicle at no charge or to a refund of the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation. To avoid having to provide these burdensome remedies, every effort must be made to promptly schedule an appointment with each customer and to repair their vehicle as soon as possible. In the recall notification letters, customers are told how to contact the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration if the recall is not completed within a reasonable time. Product Safety Recall N222366070 Fuel Tank Rollover Valve Dislodged Page 3 of 5 Dealer Responsibility – All All new, used, GM Certified Used, courtesy transportation vehicles, dealer shuttle vehicles, etc. in dealers’ possession and subject to this recall must be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this bulletin before customers take possession of these vehicles. All GM Certified Used vehicles currently in the dealers’ inventory within the Certified Pre-Owned Inventory System (CPOIS) will be de-certified and must be held and remedied per the service procedure in this bulletin. Upon submitting an accepted/paid warranty transaction in the Global Warranty Management (GWM) system, the vehicle can be re-certified for sale within the CPOIS system, or once again be used in the CTP program. Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this recall at no charge to customers, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward. Customers who have recently purchased vehicles sold from your vehicle inventory, and for which there is no customer information indicated on the dealer listing, are to be contacted by the dealer. Arrangements are to be made to make the required correction according to the instructions contained in this bulletin. A copy of the customer letter is provided in this bulletin for your use in contacting customers. Recall follow-up cards should not be used for this purpose, since the customer may not as yet have received the notification letter. In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this field action enters your vehicle inventory you must take the steps necessary to ensure the program correction has been made before selling the vehicle. In addition, for vehicles entering your facility for service, you are required to ensure the customer is aware of the open field action and make every reasonable effort to implement the program correction as set forth in this bulletin prior to releasing the vehicle. Dealer Reports – For USA & Export For dealers with involved vehicles, a listing has been prepared and will be available through GM GlobalConnect Maxis Field Action Reports or sent directly to export dealers. Production Dates : MAR 16, 2022 – MAR 21, 2022 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2022 model year Cadillac XT5, XT6, and GMC Acadia vehicles. The rollover valve in the fuel tank in some of these vehicles may not provide a proper seal in the event of a rollover crash. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If the fuel tank rollover valve is missing, fuel may leak from the vehicle during certain types of rollover crashes. If a rollover crash were to occur, and if fuel were to leak and contact an ignition source, there is an increased risk of postcrash fire. Description of the Cause : While performing a procedure to evaluate the integrity of a fuel pump connection internal to the tank, operators in GM’s assembly plant may have inadvertently dislodged a portion of the rollover valve assembly. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : NR Involved Components : Component Name 1 : TANK ASM-FUEL Component Description : Fuel Tank Assembly Component Part Number : 84724303 Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-446 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : NR Address : NR NR Country : NR Chronology : On March 22, 2022, a worker at GM’s Spring Hill assembly plant submitted an issue to GM’s Speak Up For Safety (SUFS) program following discovery of a dislodged fuel tank rollover valve in a vehicle. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Dealers will inspect the fuel tank and replace the fuel tank shell if the rollover valve is found to be dislodged or missing. Pursuant to 49 C.F.R. § 573.13(d)(1), all covered vehicles are under warranty, so reimbursement is not offered. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Fuel tank rollover valves are not dislodged. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Containment efforts were initiated on March 21, 2022. Vehicles produced after this date were not subject to the same fuel pump connect check procedure or were inspected and addressed prior to shipment. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : Dealers will be notified on June 23, 2022. GM estimates owner notification will begin on August 8, 2022.
