The reason that a vehicle has been brought into the dealership may vary widely. During the initial
diagnosis, a technician may find a B1517 set in one of the vehicles listed above.
If a B1517 is found set in any module, or even multiple modules, dealership technicians are to
first inspect the battery cable connections. In many cases, the small black wire that connects to
the larger battery negative cable is loose or damaged. If the vehicle history is reviewed, or the
customer is further questioned, it will usually be found that a battery was recently replaced in
the vehicle. This may have been done by a tech unfamiliar with the vehicle, a different shop, or
even by the customer himself.
Closely inspect the small black wire seen in the photo below. It may be loose, rotated, or pulled
out of the actual terminal. Any loose connection or damage to this circuit may cause a B1517,
especially with a symptom 5A.
It should also be noted that this is not a manufacturing concern, but rather this issue is caused
by improper service work that was previously done on the vehicle. Resecure / repair the connection
as needed.
