This Preliminary information communicates to the dealer technicians that a belt chirp or rubbing noise may be caused by the harmonic balancer out ring moving backward on the pulley and contacting the front cover.

Condition:
A customer concern may be of a belt chirp noise and/or metal to metal noise.
Cause:
The outer ring of the harmonic balancer may slide backward and cause a misalignment of the belt. The outer ring may slide back far enough to contact the timing cover and oil pan(s).
Correction:
Inspect the harmonic balancer, timing cover and oil pans. Replace as needed.

A customer concern may be of a belt chirp noise and/or metal to metal noise. The outer ring of the
harmonic balancer may slide backward and cause a misalignment of the belt. The outer ring may slide
back far enough to contact the timing cover and oil pan(s).
Correction:
Inspect the harmonic balancer, timing cover and oil pans. Replace as needed. See images below for
examples.

The new damper has a hub that is longer than the inertia ring. Movement can be identified by
inspecting the hub directly at the elastomer. Look for a witness mark of where the elastomer was
originally positioned.
