Cause
The cause of the condition may be road debris like small stones, or ice, may collect at the bottom of the front bumper lower shutter assembly and can prevent the louver from fully closing, causing the DTC’s to set.
Correction
Remove the front bumper lower shutter and complete the Lower Shutter Louver Modification Procedure below, to remove the lowest row of louvers from the shutter.

- Rotary tool (1)
- Disc cutter (2)
- Putty knife (3)
- Side cutters (4)
1. Remove the front bumper lower shutter (2) from the vehicle. Refer to Front Bumper Lower Shutter Replacement, in SI.
Tip: Pushing the lower louver outboard will allow you to cut more of the pin, which will aid in the louver removal later in the procedure.
2. Using side cutters, snip the outer pivot pins of the 2 lower louvers.
Note: The preferred way to open the louvers is to apply pressure on the drive louvers (1).
3. If not already open, rotate all louvers to the open position.
Note: This step is done to prevent damage to the frame or actuator when completing step # 5.
4. As shown in the graphic above, insert the putty knife between the link bar and the center of the shutter frame. This is the area closest to the actuator motor.
Tip: This cut is easier to accomplish with the shutter standing on end.
5. Using the rotary tool, cut the link bar (2) of the lowest louver (3), just below the louver link pin (1) above the lowest row.
6. Remove the lower louver following the steps below.
6.1. Bend the louver upwards until the previously cut outboard pivot pin (1) ejects out of the hole.
6.2. Then remove the louver and the cut link section.
7. Repeat steps # 2–6 on the other side bottom louver.
8. Reinstall the front bumper lower shutter to the vehicle. Refer to Front Bumper Lower Shutter Replacement, in SI.
