Condition
A customer may come in with an SES / CEL on and no other drivability concerns. The technician may find a DTC P219A or P219B set in the ECM.
If other drivability concerns exist, follow SI diagnostics for the concern.
Cause
After performing normal diagnostics for these codes per SI if no cause is found then there may be an AFM cylinder rocker arm
not opening the valve due to
1) A broken locking pin shelf or
2) A stuck locking pin (see pictures below)
Correction:
To test for this concern, remove the corresponding camshaft cover and turn the engine
over by hand while watching the AFM cylinder (2 or 5) rockers (SRFF’s) and valves to ensure the rocker arm
opens the valves and not just moves with the camshaft.
If this is the case and either valve does not open on the intake or exhaust, this would cause the imbalance and set the code.
At that point we recommend replacing both of the rockers( SRFF’s) on that camshaft either intake or exhaust and then reevaluate the vehicle.
