Tire Failure may Cause Sudden Air Loss

Over cured tires may develop a break in the sidewall resulting in sudden air loss or a belt edge separation which could lead to a tread/belt loss. Either condition can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT4, XT5, Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, 2018-2021 Chevrolet Express, GMC Savana, 2019-2020 Chevrolet Blazer, Silverado 1500, GMC Acadia, Sierra 1500, and certain Continental tires sold to the aftermarket for various model year 2018-2021 vehicles. The affected tires were cured for too long during production.

 

Remedy

GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tires, replacing them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 22, 2021. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Buick customer service at 1-866-608-8080, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM’s number for this recall is N212329050.

Condition

General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Continental tires installed as original equipment on certain 2018-2021 model year Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vehicles; certain 2018-2020 model year Chevrolet Blazer and Silverado 1500 and GMC Acadia and Sierra 1500 vehicles; and certain 2020 model year Buick Enclave, Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, XT4, XT5, Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse, and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles; or sold into the aftermarket by GM dealers. According to the tire manufacturer, Continental Tires the Americas (CTA), the affected tires may have an overcure condition and CTA has initiated a safety recall for these tires. According to CTA, overcured tires may experience a carcass break in the sidewall with sudden air loss or could develop a belt edge separation which could lead to partial or full tread/belt loss. These conditions may increase the risk of a crash.

 

Correction

Dealers will inspect vehicles and replace tires that have DOT number and production mold number combinations identified by Continental.

Service Procedure

IMPORTANT: Silverado and Sierra vehicles equipped with 17” General tires and Express and Savana vehicles equipped
with 16” General tires may have a spare tire involved in this recall. Inspect the spare tire and determine if it is the same
size and brand as the road tires. If it matches, inspect the sidewall information as described in the procedure. If it does
not match, no further action is required for the spare tire.

This procedure involves inspecting the tire sidewall for manufacturing information. The mold number, in parenthesis along
with the last four numbers in the DOT stamp (Date Code) indicate if the tire is involved in this recall. See the examples in
the photographs below.

Tires may experience a sudden air loss without warning while others may exhibit visible localized tread wear which may manifest as excessive vibration and/or bulging in the tread area.

No, this inspection/repair will be done at no cost to the customer.

If special instructions are provided, they will be included in the notification letters to customers.

Customers who own a vehicle involved in the field action will be notified by mail by General Motors, but they may also check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for field actions in GM Owner Center at https://my.gm.com/recalls or via NHTSA’s website at https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/.

 

Q10) If customers are concerned, can they get a rental car or courtesy transportation?

Courtesy transportation is available for customers whose vehicles are involved in this recall and are within the warranty coverage period for the warranty which is associated with this recall.  Please refer to Warranty Administration Bulletin #17-NA-073:  Field Action Courtesy Transportation Policy for further information.

Continental Tire the Americas, LLC (“CTA”) announced a voluntary recall involving 93,959 passenger tires after discovering the affected tires may experience a carcass break in the sidewall with sudden air loss or could develop a belt edge separation which could lead to a partial or full tread/belt loss. These conditions could increase the risk of serious injury or death. Tires may experience a sudden air loss without warning while others may exhibit visible localized tread wear which may manifest as excessive vibration and/or bulging in the tread area.

Attached is the Continental Product Service Information Bulletin PSIB 01-21 that relates to this tire recall.  This document has all the specific details on how to identify a recall tire, how to replace the customer’s tire, return of recall tire and reimbursement.  As a GM Dealer, you are an authorized Continental Dealer.  Please follow directions as outlined in the Continental Product Service Information Bulletin.

Attached is a list of GM Dealers who may have purchased these tires on the GM Tire Program and a cross reference of the Continental/General article numbers to applicable GM part numbers. If you are on the Dealer list, please check you inventory for recall tires in the specific DOT week and mold number and research who you may have sold the tires to.
