Summary
14371B – SPECIAL COVERAGE (LABOR CODE REVISED). SOME 2011-2014 MODEL YEAR CHEVROLET CRUZE VEHICLES AND SOME 2012-2014 CHEVROLET SONIC VEHICLES WITH THE 1.4L ENGINE MAY HAVE AN ENGINE COOLANT LEAK FROM THE WATER PUMP. THE PUMP MAY LEAK FROM THE WEEP RESERVOIR OR FROM THE WATER PUMP SHAFT SEAL, LEADING TO A DRIP OF COOLANT ONTO THE ENGINE OR ONTO THE GROUND. OVER TIME, THE LOSS OF COOLANT WILL REDUCE COOLING PERFORMANCE AND EVENTUALLY COULD LEAD TO ENGINE OVERHEATING. IF THIS CONDITION IS NOT CORRECTED, THE “SERVICE ENGINE” INDICATOR LIGHT MAY COME ON, AN “ENGINE HOT, AC OFF” MESSAGE MAY APPEAR, A CHIME MAY SOUND, AND THE ENGINE POWER MAY BE REDUCED. IF THE CONDITION OCCURS WITHIN THE SPECIAL COVERAGE TERMS,, THE WATER PUMP WILL BE REPLACED IF LEAKING.
CONDITION
SPECIAL COVERAGE ADJUSTMENT
This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.
Dealers are to replace the water pump if it is leaking. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.
For vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after October 7, 2014, are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to October 7, 2014, must be submitted to the Service Contract provider.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a “do-it-yourselfer”. They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the tools, equipment, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your dealer/retailer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information. SEOCONTENT-END
My 2013 Chev. Cruz just over heated yesterday. I was in a bad area, but stopped and placed coolant in it. Seemed ok, until I got a mile from home. Now I am told the engine is fried. Over $3000 to fixed. I still own over $8000 on the car. This is going to kill me. My wife has cancer. I can not afford this. Guess I will lose the car.
Same thing happened to me and they are telling me it will be $6980 to put a new engine in. That is more than the car is worth. Plus General Motors did not send me anything to inform me of the problem. All I could go on was researching to find this. General Motors knows they are putting out a bad product and not telling people. Sounds to me like a class action lawsuit waiting to happen!!!!
I bought my 2013 cruze in June 1, 2016 and the recall was already in effect . Is it legal for them to sell a car with those open recall? It also has the safety issue of the the axle fracturing! Both were active when they sold me the car. This car has been worked on so many times it’s ridiculous. It started 2 weeks after I bought it and they wanted to charge me to look at it and wouldnt help me at all. Then said I can come back abd they will trade it in for another better car in 6 months. They didn’t OBVIOUSLY. Now I cant trade it in because I’m 4000 dollars upside down on my loan after 2.5 yrs? They scammed me so bad I cant believe it. I need someone to help me get out from under this car. I’m stuck. Anyways dont buy a cruze!!
2013 Cruze had same water pump problem; caused overheating which led to turbocharger failing; had to have replaced at a cost of $1200; at the time vehicle had been out of warranty less than 2 months.
I have a chev orlando 2012 and my temp gauge stays down on lowest setting even after driveing for quite some time.. I notice the coolant resivour is down some too.
2012 Chevy Cruze leaking coolant at water pump and reservoir. Took it to GM dealer said my VIN was not one that came with the special warranty coverage , however their was another soecialwarranty warranty one that covered the thermostat so they replaced that for free but to fix everything they wanted $800 I told them no thanks I’ll replace the pump myself , after replacing the water pump and the thermostat replaced by GM dealership the reservoir started bubbling and spilling it appeared to be boiling, we are thinking it might be a blown/cracked head gasket from the water pump not pumping coolant properly before it got replaced but my friend noticed that Everytime the reservoir would leak from boiling was when the fan was off, so we rigged the electrical that keeps the fan on so it stays on and the car would work good now we need to figure out if that was the issue than it’s a sensor that is off causing the fan to not work at the proper time, that is were I’m at so far,I’ll keep updated as it comes and taking any advice .
I have a 2014 Chevy Sonic LS with a 1.8 liter engine, it is leaking coolant, I need to find out why.
I am having this exact problem with my 2015 Chevy cruze. I literally just got this car. And now I can’t even drive it. Who do I get in touch with to ask if this issue wasn’t resolved with these previous years. There is no reason I should have to be replacing a water pump this early.
Took our 2012 Sonic in to the biggest Chevy Dealer in town ( Bobby Layman Chevrolet in Columbus, OH), they wanted $500 right off the bat because they said they had to replace the coolant reservoir and line before they could even begin to dig deeper for the cause of the coolant leak. Nope! We will be taking it to another shop to be looked at.
4/12/2017, The dealership replaced my water pump on my 2012 Sonic with 101,000 miles on the car after they replaced the warped intake manifold and a leaky oil seal. I found out about the free water pump replacement when the dealership called for me to pick up my car and the charge was $1800.00 dollars for the new manifold, leaky oil seal and normal maintenance I have the dealership perform on my car on schedule. I have returned my Sonic since the first repair 2/21/2017 5 additional times since the first repair. My opinion is the defective water pump caused my engine to run hot and warped my intake manifold and since the dealership is unable to fix my car it appears there is more damage because of heat. After paying $152 dollars for the last fix now the dealership wants an additional $350.00 dollars. Stay away from the 1.4 turbo or any small turbo motor.
Hi Steve,
Sorry to hear about your experience. Our 2011 Cruze seems to have the same problem.
I found the service bulletin online and intend on taking the car in later this week (week of May 12, 2017).
Dealers are even bigger scumbags than GM itself. Did they give you a hard time to get reimbursed? I’m willing to bet they’ll be dodgy when I take my car in this week.
Any advice on how I should proceed?
Hopefully you can help.
Regards,
Ronnell
Just had the water pump replaced. I didnt know about the recall so i am sending it in for a refund. Hopefully all goes good. Unfortunately i still have leaks. Come to find out i have four cooling lines that the crimps are bad and the cooler itself is bad too. ALL SAID AND DONE THE COST WILL BE ABOUT $2000-$600 for the water pump…$1400 dollars. JUNK!!!!!2011 Chevy Cruze with 90K miles only….
i believe GM owes EVERYONE who owns a Cruz a REFUND- the water pump is the least of your worries! I have a 2011 cruz and have NEVER gone 6 months WITHOUT A MAJOR ISSUE! These cars were put on the lot for the consumer even when the company knew about ALL OF THE PROBLEMS – The anti-freeze issue (i had that problem after only 300 miles!!!) and not 1 dealership would listen to me – I had to take it to my brother in law who builds jet engines for Honeywell to get that resolved! I have had belts snap , loose battery cables, oil leaks, water pump and now get ready for the NEXT “RECALL” – BROKEN HEAD GASKET- BECAUSE OF THE PUMP !!!! WHAT THE HECK- NEVER EVER EVER…EVER EVER – WILL I BUY CHEVY AGAIN- EVER!!!
I have a 2011 Cruze . I’ve had 2 water pumps put on this car. It has 154,000 miles and I am losing antifreeze again!!! I am getting the a/c shut off message and temps to high. I’ve had a thermostat put on the car at 5000 miles. Seems like every 50,000 miles I’m putting a water pump on. I have had a film that keeps getting on windows from day 1 of owning car. Get on here and see a lot of people are having same problems with this car!????????????
Did the gm special coverage paid for both repairs on the water pumps? Because gm paid for my first recall repair but I have the same problem again and I don’t know if they will pay for the repair again.
I have the odor smell it gets so bad I can’t stand to drive the car it makes me nausea. I’ve been told the heater core is getting ready to go up. I haven’t taken it to the dealer yet, after research on the Internet it seems alot of people are having the same issue. Why doesn’t Chevy have a recall? My Cruz is 3 years old only over 40,000 miles.
I just had my 2013 Chevy Cruze towed in the nearest Chevy dealership. Appreciate Chevy Roadside assistance and I want this matter taken care of. Talked to the automotive tech and he said I had extremely low coolant and that I could pick it up. My response was you will check for leaks including the waterpump. Needless to say my vehicle is still there and I won’t be satisfied with just keep coolant in it. Crazy !
Okay have my Cruze back. Was told no leaks from the water pump but they did replace the thermostat which they finally caught a code when test driving it two days later indicating a stuck open thermostat. We shall see ????????????????
Just had mine replaced n/c under the extended warranty, 2011 model. I made sure to bring my letter stating #14371 to refresh the dealer’s memory about this issue.
Your bulletin was very informative. My Dealership wants to charge me 1353.00 plus tax to repair this same problem with my 2011 Chevy Cruze. They told me nothing about this problem that the 2011 car had. Why didn’t they know that when they looked up info on my car? All they said was that the water pump was shot, mentioned thermostate housing and outlet and that it is not driveable.
I find this information very good since my Dealership wants to charge me to do the repairs on my 2011 Chevy Cruze. Why didn’t they tell me this when they looked up info on my car. They stated the repairs will cost me $1,353. plus tax. I consider this highway robbery.
