Condition

Some customers may comment on one or more of the following conditions when driving in extremely cold weather conditions (-18°C or less / 0°F or less):

  • Loss of power
  • Hesitation on acceleration
  • Stalling condition
  • MIL Illuminated

Cause

This condition may be caused by ice accumulation in the charge air cooler (CAC), restricting air flow.

Correction

A winter grille cover has been released to address this issue. Instructions for installation are included with the grille cover. The cover can be installed by the technician initially but the technician needs to educate the customer on the removal process after the winter season ends and how the customer will reinstall the cover the following winter season. One time installation of the winter grille cover is covered under warranty. This can be installed and charged to the unique labor operation code provided in this bulletin.

Important: The winter grille cover should be installed in extreme cold weather and removed when the winter season changes.

Additional covers and repeat installation are customer pay.

Important: Refer to #PIP5540J: Diagnostic Tip: Poor Engine Performance Or CEL On In Cold Ambient Temperatures On Vehicles Equipped With Turbocharged Gasoline Engines May Set One Or More Of The Following DTCs P0299 P2227 – (Oct 6, 2021) for additional service information on cleaning the CAC prior to winter grille cover installation.

Note: Clean the surface before installing the winter grille cover.
