Summary
This technical bulletin provides a procedure to replace the charge air cooler due to moisture getting inside of it and causing a malfunction indicator lamp illuminated with DTC P0300 and/or P0299/P2227.
Condition
Some customers may comment on a Malfunction Indicator Lamp illuminated or a reduced power complaint
During diagnosis, a technician may find DTC P0300, P0299, P0234 and/or P2227 set or stored.
Cause
This condition may be caused by a moisture build up inside the charge air cooler (CAC). This condition is more likely on the smaller displacement engines where an air-to-air charge air cooler is used.
In cold temperatures, ambient and PCV moisture can freeze in the charge air cooler, restricting flow, and causing DTC P0299 and/or P2227, or P0300.
Correction
The correction required will be based on the build of the vehicle, previous repairs that may have been made, and the operating conditions. Use the chart to determine which repair is required. The more severe the cold weather driving conditions, the more operations may need to be implemented. Blocking cold air from the CAC is the main objective to help prevent the moisture from freezing.
The first requirement is to ensure there are no leaks in the system from the turbocharger to the throttle body, specifically at the charge air cooler. Perform a smoke leak test (Dealer Essential Tool GE-52250 Power Smoke Diagnostic Leak Detector), then follow the appropriate repair steps, depending on the test results, build date, and outside driving condition temperature.
Note: In rare cases where the addition of a charge air cooler shutter doesn’t prevent CAC freezing, install the lower portion of the soft grill cover. Inform the customer to remove the cover from the grill when temperatures are consistently averaging 32F/0C or above.
Note: Frozen oil/water condensate contaminant in the Turbocharger Wastegate
Regulator Solenoid Valve (TCV) is often concurrent with vehicle operation conditions that cause CAC freezing. If DTC P0234 is set – Turbocharger Wastegate Regulator Solenoid Valve Inspection.
Important: For additional information on Oil/Moisture Condensate Freezing Up in the Turbocharger Wastegate Regulator Solenoid Valve, refer to Service Procedure (Part 1).
Important: Look at the shutter through the lower grill opening to make sure it is not being restricted by debris such as grass or insects. An obstruction will prevent the shutter from operating correctly in both cold and warmer temperatures, decreasing its effectiveness in cold weather, and hindering engine performance in warmer temperatures.
Instruct the vehicle owner to periodically check the shutter and spray it off to keep it clean and performing as intended.

- User-Friendly: With a simple and intuitive interface, the device has a low entry barrier, making it easy for even first-time users to quickly get started
- 【Why Need It】For example: 1. The rupture of the vacuum hose will cause the mixture to be too thick, the idle speed will increase, the hot car will not start well, the engine will surge during acceleration, the fuel consumption will increase significantly, and the exhaust pipe will emit black smoke. 2. Blocking will cause the idle speed to drift, and the idle speed is easy to stall. 3. Air leakage in the vacuum tube will cause the engine to run weakly
- 【No Air Pump】1. The AUTOOL SDT103 smoke leak detector doesn't come with an internal air pump, so you'll need to connect it to an external workshop air source and a 12V vehicle power supply to bring in the workshop air.2. Turn the flow control dial of the AUTOOL SDT103 smoke leak detector counterclockwise to open the airflow, and then switch on the power at the back of the device. This will start the AUTOOL SDT103 machine, generating smoke. (When adding smoke oil to the AUTOOL SDT103 smoke leak detector, make sure not to exceed 20 ml, and please use baby oil or paraffin oila).
- 【External Flow Meter】You can easily control the air pressure, because the air pressure of each pipe in the car is different. If the air pressure is too high, the pipe will be damaged, and if the air pressure is too low, the leak will not be detected. Therefore, the flow meter is very important to protect your detection system more effectively. Make testing safer
- 【EVAP Detection】American cars that began production in 1996 are equipped with EVAP service ports; in most American cars, the EVAP service port is usually located in the engine compartment, but the EVAP service port of some special models may be located in other locations. GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a “do-it-yourselfer”. They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information. WE SUPPORT VOLUNTARY TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION
