Summary
This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician for a water leak in in the second and third row seating area. Inspect the C-pillar which is the body vertical structure behind the rear passenger door area of the affected side of the vehicle for water intrusion or water marks on the seat belt retractor. If water evidence is found on the seat belt webbing or the retractor the seat belt/ retractor must be replaced after the water leak has been corrected and verified. There are 3 areas of seam sealer that will need to be addressed. After gaining access to the C-pillar and rear quarter panel area inspect for voids or missing seam sealer and apply a clear flow able seam sealer where needed.

Supersession Statement
This PI was superseded to update Model Years and Conditon/Concern. Please discard PIT5426A.
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition / Concern
Some customers may comment of a second row outboard seat belt being wet and/Or Carpet Wet From The C-Pillar Area Rearward
Recommendations / Instructions
IMPORTANT: If an outboard seat belt is determined to have become wet or if the customer mentioned that the seat belt became wet from the c-pillar area water leak, the seat belt retractor assembly must be replaced.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT replace the seat belt retractor assembly until the water leak repair and verification has been performed.
To correct the condition there are 3 areas of body seam sealer that needs to be addressed. Clear flowable seam sealer can be applied to the areas as shown in the pictures below. To allow for proper repair, the luggage carrier roof side rail on the affected side will need to be removed, (with pillar trim being repositioned and the headliner partially lowered for rail access), see SI for removal instructions.
- – On the affected side, reposition away the c-pillar / body lock pillar upper trim panel, andpartially release the forward portion of the cargo area / quarter lower rear trim panel to allow for inspection of the second row outboard seat belt webbing and retractor.
- – Inspect for water stains on the retractor, webbing, and on the sheet metal near theretractor. Webbing may not show evidence of being wet after it dries.
- – If the seat belt webbing or retractor or sheet metal near the retractor shows signs ofhaving become wet, or if the customer mentioned that the seat belt was wet as a result of a water leak, the seat belt retractor assembly must be replaced. Replace the seat belt retractor assembly following water leak repair and verification testing.
- – With the quarter panel weather strip removed, inspect for clear seam sealer between the cpillar and rear quarter panel (Area 1 as seen above).
- – If seam sealer is not present, or if any gaps are found in the sealer, apply clear flowableseam sealer between the c-pillar and rear quarter panel sheet metal as shown per red line in picture.
- – With the roof rail removed on the affected side, inspect existing seam sealer in the area shown; door surround to quarter panel and roof panel (Area 2 as seen above) for skips or pin holes in the sealer.
- – Fill any voids or pins holes found in the existing seam sealer with clear flowable seamsealer.
- – With the roof rail removed on the affected side, inspect existing seam sealer in the area shown; quarter panel to roof panel (Area 3 as seen above) for skips or pull-away along the outboard edge.
- – Apply clear flowable seam sealer along the rear quarter panel to roof seam as illustrated inpicture above.
- – Test to ensure the water leak has been repaired.
- – If it was determined that the seat belt retractor requires replacement, replace theretractor, then reinstall the interior trim.
