Summary
This Preliminary information communicates to the dealer technician that if the vehicle’s engine coolant reservoir has transmission fluid in it or if Glycol it found in the transmission fluid the dealer should replace the Automatic Transmission Fluid Cooling Exchanger. The dealer should refer to bulletin 08-07-30-035 for the recommended components that should be replaced in the transmission and to flush the engine cooling system following service information.
Condition
Some customers may comment of the following conditions:
Engine coolant reservoir is discolored with a strawberry milkshake appearance and may be overilled to the point where coolant is being expelled from the overflow.
In addition to above, engine, and/or transmission may experience an overheat condition.
In addition, possible degraded transmission performance including any of the following:
Shudder, vibration, shake, shift performance and slipping. The transmission fluid level may be low when checked.
Transmission may have overheat/burnt fluid, with or without any DTC setting, and/or without showing the strawberry milkshake appearance.
Any transmission related concern found with vehicle built between the build dates listed above, should have the fluid tested for possible glycol contamination.
Cause
The Automatic Transmission Fluid Cooling Exchanger may have an internal leak allowing transmission fluid and engine coolant to intermix contributing to and of the above conditions.
