Improperly Sealed Seam on Fuel Tank

A fuel leak in the presence of the ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

Summary

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Chevrolet Equinox all-wheel drive vehicles. The fuel tanks may have been manufactured with an improperly sealed seam, possibly allowing fuel to leak along the seam near the fuel inlet.

 

Remedy

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel tank, free of charge. The recall began October 24, 2019. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-586-596-1733. GM’s number for this recall is N192271870.

Dear General Motors Customer:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2019 – 2020 model year Chevrolet Equinox vehicles equipped with all-wheel drive.  As a result, GM is conducting a safety recall.  We apologize for this inconvenience.  However, we are concerned about your safety and continued satisfaction with our products.

 

I M P O R T A N T

  • Your vehicle is involved in GM recall N192271870.
  • Schedule an appointment with your GM dealer.
  • This service will be performed for you at no charge.

 

Why is your vehicle being recalled? The fuel tanks in these vehicles may have been manufactured with an improperly sealed seam.  An improperly sealed seam could allow fuel to leak along the seam near the fuel inlet, increasing the risk of fire in the presence of an ignition source.

 

What will we do? Your GM dealer will replace the fuel tank.  This service will be performed for you at no charge.  Because of service scheduling requirements, it is likely that your dealer will need your vehicle longer than the actual service correction time of approximately 2 hours.

 

What should you do? You should contact your GM dealer to arrange a service appointment as soon as possible.

A3) Customers may notice a fuel odor if the fuel tank seam is leaking.

A4) Dealers will replace the fuel tank.

 

Q5) What is the safety risk?  Is the vehicle safe to drive?
A5) If leaked fuel encounters a potential ignition source, a fire could occur.

 

Q6) Does the customer have to pay for this remedy/repair?
A6) No, this inspection/repair will be done at no cost to the customer.

 

Q7) Is the remedy/repair available now?
A7) No, when a remedy is available and/or sufficient quantity of parts are available, the recall bulletin will be released, and dealers can begin repairing vehicles.

 

Q8) What should customers do until recall repairs can be completed?  Are there any special instructions?
A8) If special instructions are provided, they will be included in the notification letters to customers.

 

Q9) How can customers check to see if their vehicle is involved in this field action?
A9)

 

Customers who own a vehicle involved in the field action will be notified by mail by General Motors, but they may also check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for field actions in GM Owner Center at https://my.gm.com/recalls or via NHTSA’s website at https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/.

 

Q10) If customers are concerned, can they get a rental car or courtesy transportation?
A10) Courtesy transportation is available for customers whose vehicles are involved in this recall and are within the warranty coverage period for the warranty which is associated with this recall.  Please refer to Warranty Administration Bulletin #17-NA-073:  Field Action Courtesy Transportation Policy for further information.
