IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL

October 2019

This notice applies to your vehicle, VIN: _____________________________________

Dear General Motors Customer:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2014-2018 model year Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra, and GMC Yukon vehicles.  As a result, GM is conducting a safety recall.  We apologize for this inconvenience.  However, we are concerned about your safety and continued satisfaction with our products.

I M P O R T A N T

  • Your vehicle is involved in GM safety recall N192268490.
  • Schedule an appointment with your GM dealer.
  • This service will be performed for you at no charge.

Why is your vehicle being recalled? These vehicles may have a condition in which the engine-mounted mechanical vacuum pump output may decrease over time, decreasing the amount of vacuum/power brake assist. If the vacuum level drops, customers may experience increased brake pedal effort, hard brake pedal, and/or potentially increased stopping distance, increasing the risk of a crash. The Driver’s Information Center (DIC) “Service brake assist” alert will activate 2-5 minutes after the vacuum level drops, and a

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will also be set. The condition is more prevalent at low speed when softly applying the brakes.

What will we do? These vehicles are equipped with a secondary, hydraulic power brake assist system that activates to provide power brake assist if the vacuum drops, however, as calibrated the hydraulic brake boost assist is limited at lower speeds. Your GM dealer will reprogram the electronic brake control module with a new calibration that will improve how the system utilizes the hydraulic brake boost assist function when vacuum assist is depleted. This service will be performed for you at no charge. Because of service scheduling requirements, it is likely that your dealer will need your vehicle longer than the actual time of approximately 30 minutes.
What should you do? You should contact your GM dealer to arrange a service appointment as soon as possible.
Do you have questions? If you have questions or concerns that your dealer is unable to resolve, please contact the appropriate Customer Assistance Center at the number listed below.

1 Associated Investigation

Brake Vacuum Pump Failure
NHTSA ID: PE18012
Dated opened: November 20, 2018

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 111 reports of hard brake pedal effort accompanied by extended stopping distance in model years (MY) 2014 to 2016 General Motors (GM) light trucks based on the K2XX platform, 1500 series Pickup Trucks and Sport Utility Vehicles (Silverado, Sierra, Suburban, Yukon, Tahoe, Escalade). These conditions are attributed to deterioration of the engine-driven brake assist vacuum pump. Nine of these incidents included vehicles incurring damage as a result colliding with another vehicle or fixed object at low speeds.

The brake assist vacuum pump is driven by an accessory belt on the engine and serves as the source of power brake vacuum in the subject vehicles. Over time, the pump’s capacity to generate vacuum may deteriorate. The subject vehicles receive supplemental hydraulic brake assist from the ABS system, albeit at lower levels than the vacuum-powered primary system. If the brake assist vacuum pump fails to operate as intended, the amount of brake power assist supplied to the driver can be significantly reduced, extending the subject vehicle stopping distance.

A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency, circumstances, and safety consequences of the alleged defect.

The ODI complaints cited above can be viewed at www.nhtsa.gov under the following ODI identification numbers: 11143759, 11143710, 11143349, 11142826, 11142685, 11142544, 11142374, 11140624, 11140321, 11139980, 11139614, 11139210, 11132847, 11132455, 11131903, 11131066, 11128191, 11124506, 11124227, 11123463, 11121979, 11121611, 11102448, 11101165, 11099906, 11121172, 11119847, 11118984, 11118870, 11111834, 11115151, 11114340, 11113548, 11112722, 11110640, 11110393, 11110264, 11105051, 11104203, 11103906, 11104097, 11101822, 11102108, 11100297, 11099907, 11098785, 11097335, 11094026, 11011875, 11090358, 11089691, 11089278, 11089173, 11088926, 11084934, 11084610, 11082247, 11078820, 11072654, 11065323, 11056319, 11081406, 11072905, 11075730, 11067395, 11056635, 11055292, 11021419, 11065274, 11064605, 11064080, 11063087, 11056908, 11054734, 11054123, 11053444, 11067234, 11048544, 11048333, 11046974, 11045731, 11044677, 11031984, 11030722, 11030016, 11025403, 11022709, 11020372, 11003691, 10995134, 11047239, 11043192, 11034792, 11034518, 11033883, 11032103, 11030685, 11021601, 11006271, 11002554, 11001423, 10991595, 11013706, 10984684, 10967071, 11119907, 11083289, 11062858, 11047981, 11041607, 11021253

Reprogramming

GM Diagnostic/Programming (TIS2Web)

Approved J2534 Device with TIS2WEB can reprogram 1996 and later All GM Modules.

To obtain the latest electronic controller calibration information for your vehicle, go to https://tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web and enter the vehicle's 17 character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and select 'Get CAL ID’.

You can then compare the latest part number with the actual number installed on the vehicle to determine if a reprogram is needed.

The Service Programming System (SPS) application is part of the TIS2Web system. To program an ECU, the SPS application must communicate with the vehicle control modules using the proper J2534 programming interface tool.

The following are the supported interface tools:

The Tech 2 supports model years 1996 and beyond. With the addition of the CAN Diagnostic Interface (CANdi) module, Tech 2 is fully backward compatible with current Tech 2 functionality and operates transparently when diagnosing non-CAN-equipped vehicles.

Servicing the next generation Global A vehicles will require the diagnostic software, GDS2, Global Diagnostic System 2 running on a local PC device while the MDI is connected to the vehicle. The GM MDI is the Global Diagnostic tool for future vehicles starting with Global A vehicles.

The GM MDI was introduced in the fall of 2007 for Pass-Thru programming and offers faster programming speed. It can be used to perform Pass-Thru programming on all vehicles built since 1996 and into the future. Click here to view a list of GDS supported vehicles.
